Peacekeeper - The Browser Benchmark

Hi Toggie, I hadn’t seen you in ages

Hi Toggie, I hadn't seen you in ages Smiley

Hi Japo, I’ve not been around much…

Here you go a few of my tests to start off:

IE8 only scored 451 with my system but it’s the only one I tested and the only one I have lol

I enjoy firefox because its quite fast (Not the fastest, but its good enough =) and also it has thousands of addons and skins to make it just-for-you. Personally I think its great!

Main browser: FF
2nd: Opera

I have both on my several PCs and Portable HDD & Thumb Drives.

FF for me, tops Opera for it’s productivity function (read: profiles & extensions).
You can call Opera have ALL addon for FF, but it’s just not.

I do wide array of technical computer jobs to make a living.
Sometimes I develop a website, and in the other day I’m a technical support for a marketing team.
With FF, I can set several bookmark profile to synch-up whenever I need one.
And this is also true with the browser’s profile as well.
I can create some browser profiles that will suit the client I represent.
This profiles are the best thing I found on FF.
Several profiles mean, several setups; resulting in a different sets of extensions & bookmarks.
This feature also available by default in Thunderbird, wich is a great e-mail client by the way.

Opera on the other hand, also have this kind of function, but in a different flavor.
Although it run almost toe to toe with FF’s profile, Opera force us to synch-up with their server to use this so called ‘different’ profile.

FF allow us to store our profile locally & networkally.
You can save & set your profile to a network/internet server, or storing it locally in a different hidden folder of your choice.

You can try FF’s Profile Manager, with the following command from the ‘Run Box’:
firefox -profilemanager

networkally

You speak good England!

lol ^o^;

Hey, that word pass the spell check you know

This is why I love Opera Once Again

Why I love Opera?

Opera has the equivalent of at least 150 extensions. Now imagine a speedtest between Opera in default settings and FF with 150 extensions… I sometimes dream of this test… >:-D ;D (:KWL) (:NRD)

I use Firefox:

  1. Because it’s more secure than IE
  2. NoScript and AdBlock Plus addons
  3. Because I’m used to it.

Well if you use Avast and enable web shield it will automatically scan your files as you download.

I probably mentioned it already earlier in this thread (too lazy to check right now):
I’m in love with Opera. Really. I use it for years now, with ff as a backup. I tried IE8, too, but nothing compares to Opera 10 beta at the moment

The guy who create the list, NEVER tried the FF’s extensions mentioned on the list (read the comment section from his blog).
He just went on to the FF’s addon page, read the description, and make list out of it.
And yet, he make a lot of comment based on what’s interest him most; his preferred browser = Opera.
That guy didn’t even know that FasterFox is merely a simple GUI to tweak the FF’s internal config.
And not to mention that the list suggest on installing quite a mouthful of Opera’s widget just to make it even with the FF’s side…

Biased.

As a photographer I have a lot of photos posted online and I access them often to add more. For me the speed of the browser I use is very important and that is why I use Opera which is fully custom programmable for blazing speed unlike Firefox and IE which do not have this onboard option available.

Below is a capture of 6 different 8-10 MB downloads of collections of photos that I routinely do each day. The first 6 downloads as measured just last night by my Bandwidth Meter Pro were done with FireTuned Firefox 3.0.10 (which adds about 6 mbps) and the next 6 downloads on the right of the graph were done with the custom programmed Opera 10 Beta Browser…

Opera continues to be my main browser because as can be seen in this graph it downloads these 6 sets of pictures 18 seconds faster than Firefox even though it has the advantage of FireTune.

It might be a better idea if you were to compare like with like. using a program like Firetune is a waste of time. If you really want to make fx go, ‘tweak’ it by hand.

Anyway, talk of 3.0.10 is academic. 3,5 is now RC and will be released in the very near future, it’s a great deal faster than previous versions.

3.6 with a tweak or two is even better…

Toggie- Here I benchtested Firefox 3.5 Beta 4 (left) and Opera 9.64 (right) using 5 of the same downloads and as you predicted Firefox 3.5 Beta 4 is faster than Firefox 3.0.10 with FireTune and almost twice as fast as stock Firefox 3.0.10 which turns in peak bandwidths of about 9 mbps and about 10 seconds per download.

I’m looking forward to seeing some screenshots of your expertly ‘hand tweaked’ Firefox browser’s performance.

Just tried out Opera and wound up uninstalling it. My mouse scroll wheel does not work with it and I could not get it to save login cookies while deleting all others. The cleanup program I use will only sort the IE cookies so I’m sticking with IE8, I’m very impressed with it and totally satisfied. I also did not find Opera any faster in actual use even though it did score higher on the Peacekeeper test posted in this thread.

Dch48- I had just the opposite experience with my Logitech MX Revolution mouse in that Opera has so many features that I no longer have to run the 20 MB RAM Logitech Software to get the scroll wheel running properly and do instant searches with the search engine of my choice. Since the CCleaner I use to securely delete cookies works with IE, FF, and Opera I have no problem in that department either. The cookie deletion problems you had in Opera can be addressed in Tools>Delete Private Data where temporary and logon cookies are differentiated.

I don’t use CCleaner as much as I used to though because Opera can be programmed to generate no temporary internet files whatsoever so I no longer have to waste time deleting them.
