BOClean 4.25 hogging CPU - Reinstallation Doesn't Resolve

Strange, ???

I use the following…

Comodo Firewall Pro
Comodo BOClean
Comodo Memory Guardian

Avast anti-virus,
SpywareBlaster
Spybot

and Winpatrol

No conflicts or hang ups at all here.

Mike.

I almost forgot :-[

It seems that Tyler found a solution for this problem :

So I think we can expect a 4.26 version soon

Greetz, Red.

Hello

I had this issue and I think I have found a workaround.

  1. check where “BOC425.XVU” file is stored (boclean config)
  2. stop BOC425.EXE using task manager
  3. delete BOC425.INI located in your windows folder
  4. delete boc425.xvu
  5. run comodo boclean updater to get an updated boc425.xvu file
  6. start boc425.exe (comodo boclean)
  7. reboot

Regards
Sergio

I’m not running CMG, only AVG Anti-RAM, oops, I mean Anti-spy, and AVG Anti-virus., and process tamer (Boclean excluded, as are the Anti- things.

Boclean 4.25 was going nuts for the last few days. 50 to 90+ % of CPU for no apparent reason.

Your fix worked Sergio, thank you. I had a brief few second spike to 90% 30 seconds or so after reboot/log-in, and thought “yet another fix dies in the dust”. Then it dropped back to normal, almost zero with occasional spikes but nothing that bothers me. System idle is back to 95%. All is well.

Bilou bows to Sergio and doffs his cap. Sergio is herebye promoted to god of fixes.

I’m posting in the hope that my experience & different solution adds another piece to the puzzle for anyone who needs it.

fwiw, I had 100% CPU usage locking up everything, but although I tried this fix, it wasn’t what solved my issue.

After the uninstall/ reinstall I thought about the posts I found elsewhere which mention disabling auto-update, looked at my own system’s security setup & realized that at bootup both avira antivir PE & BoClean would be silently updating, & then I had each of them set to silently update every six hours.

For a while I thought I had licked it with the “wait x minutes before updating Boclean” setting, but even with an HOUR wait, the situation repeated itself later in the day.

What worked for me - three days now! - is not enabling BoClean to auto-update at all AND changing Avira’s settings from silent update to “show the update.” Seeing Avira update reminds me every six hours to update BoClean! When the update finishes, & CPU/memory are normal, I manually update Boclean.

I did it this way cause BoClean showed the 100% CPU usage on my machine; Avira doesn’t. It’s quite possible doing the opposite - enabling Boclean autoupdate & disabling Avira, would work equally well.

I’ve have the same problem of Boclean v4.25 hogging 100% of my CPU on my XP2 machine. The workaround mentioned above of deleteing the BOC425.XVU and the INI file didn’t do any good. Also terminating CMG didn’t do any good.

On occassion, Boclean will operate as it should with very low CPU usuage, with periodic spikes during the system interogation, but most of the time it’s 100%. Opening the menu doesn’t do any good because Boclean locks up. Need to terminate Boclean with the task manager.

SUre hope that Comodo will address this problem.

Cheers,
Jim

Hi jimlarkey, welcome to the forum

You could try an uninstall and than install BOClean in SafeMode.

Greetz, Red.

Why might the safemode uninstall/install be any different? Boclean worked OK on my desktop for several weeks, and had nothing to do with corrupted install. It continues to work OK on my laptop.

Before I try this and that, I hope Comodo will address this issue that seems to have a prettygood following. Thanks for your suggestion though.

Cheers,
Jim

Hey Jim

Comodo is aware of this issue, and it will be fixed isn the next release. What we know is that other security programs can trigger this issue. We also know that there are different solutions that may/may not work for different people. The uninstall and install in SafeMode at least ensures us that no other security program can interfere on installing

Greetz, Red.

Thanks Red for your post reassuring me that Comodo folks are aware of the problem. As I compose this reply, Boclean is OK. As I mentioned, the problem is intermitant, so I’ll wait for the next update. Thanks again for your reassurance.

Cheers Buddy!
Jim

You are welcome m8

As the numer of nasties quadruples monthly, BOClean is a lot busier than it used to be, and simple truth is, the more you’re running, the more the same needs to be sniffed at for each “spike” of checking EVERYTHING that’s running, even if it was running the last CPU cycle.

Things were a lot saner years ago when a nasty would start, could be sniffed at and then dismissed as "OK … fact is, a LOT of nasties nowadays SLEEP in hopes of … not running, not detected, I can wait a few minutes and NOW I’ll do my damage … such is the nature of malware these days. BOClean has learned like ALL wise users, trust NO ONE … and so it sniffs again. My apologies as to what it comes to, but that IS the design. :frowning:

Thanks Kevin,

Your post is why I have turned off Ad-Watch, and am using BoClean…I know Comodo is a better product.

I might mention that for the past couple of days, BoClean has NOT hogged/locked-up the CPU. So the behavior seems to be erratic, and not associated with the install. I am using Avast for my AV security.

I continue to NOT use CMG, which is different than my practice of a couple of days ago.

Thanks again for being there guys!
Jim

Had same problem. cut off auto update and now do it myself. it was updating too often and would use all power while doing so.

Thanks, but i don’t think my problem was related to updating.
Good Luck, & Cheers!
Jim

I’ve been using BoClean for about the last 8 or 9 months with no detections and for about the last month it’s been spiking the CPU constantly. I don’t know if it was the last update, or what, but I just had to turn it off this afternoon as my fans were running full blast and it only took several minutes for them to quiet after shutting down Boclean. I’m running Comodo’s FW, MFW, & KAV as well, and there hasn’t been any problems except for the last 3 or 4 weeks. I can’t believe how quiet it just got with BoClean shut down. The system is responding much better too, as I’m on this little PIII 'net computer right now and it’s got less than half-a-gig of ram.

Check the thread https://forums.comodo.com/comodo_boclean_antimalware/why_is_bo_clean_fine_for_a_week_then_goes_green_and_locks_up-t20036.15.html

Updating does indeed seem to cause the CPU hogging on some PCs.

Cheers,
Jim

thx. But if you mean turn off auto-updates on BoClean, I do that on everything, just so I know what/&when programs are calling home and when they’re quiet when auto-updates are turned off. If they’re not and trying to constantly pound the FW when auto-updates are off, then I dump them. Mcafee is the worst, and KAV is pretty close, but you can control KAV by setting it to update from file. I’ve never let BoClean update itself automatically, as I don’t KAV, XP, or anything else.

To Whom It Concerns –

The uninstall and reinstall BOClean advice has always been a bunch of hooey.

This is a suggested fix that corrects the problem after BOClean pegs the cpus
(Intel Core2 Duo) when also running Vista32:

  1. Kill BOC425.EXE. The pegged cpu(s) makes it impossible to shutdown BOC425.EXE
    in an orderly manner.

  2. Then stop the BOCore service. If BOCore will not stop in an orderly manner, kill it,
too. Almost always, BOCore will stop in an orderly manner.

  3. Re-launch BOC425.EXE. Wait for the initial start-up scan to complete.

  4. Re-start the BOCore service.

This fix doesn’t work on just one system. It has worked on every Vista on Intel Core2
Duo system I’ve laid hands on, that encounters BOClean pegging the cpus.

There is some kind of spurious race condition that crops up between BOC425.EXE and
BOCore, after BOClean attempts an automatic update – whether or not an update
transpired.

What is crucial to recovery is that BOC425.EXE must start and then settle down,
while BOCore is stopped and before BOCore is re-started.

If you do not stop/kill BOCore, in the sequence described above, and just start/kill the
pegged BOC425.EXE, you will only momentarily clear the pegged cpu condition, until
the next time BOClean attempts another automatic update. In some cases,
BO425.EXE will immediately resume pegging the cpu.

This problem and fix also pre-dates 4.25.001.

BOC425.EXE’s propensity to spuriously run-away can be a serious problem for
older cpus that do not throttle themselves down, even though they remain
pegged, in order to avoid thermal failure. It can result in hardware damage.

Hope this helps.

Thanks alerter…

I don’t have Intel Core2 Duo and not running Vista32, but your suggestion does center on the BOClean Updater, which does appear to be the source of the problem.

Other users have found that turning off the auto-Updater works…including myself. Check the thread:
https://forums.comodo.com/comodo_boclean_antimalware/why_is_bo_clean_fine_for_a_week_then_goes_green_and_locks_up-t20036.0.html

I certainly agree with your opinion of uninstall/install…that seems to be the universal suggested solution for any PC problem…and rarely works. It’s only trumped by simply reinstall Windows.

Jim
