I’m curious…
Are the default “Attack Detection” settings considered optimal for a single stand-alone system? And,
are they needed at all if a computer is behind a hardware router?

Comodo at stock install is just fine. I am also behind a hardware firewall. Be sure your hardware firewall is fully stealthed. Thats your best and first line of defense. I mainly use Comodo for the HIPS and program control.
