Are these normal system events, or result of malware?

After having booted in safe mode, I noticed these entries in system events viewer:

DCOM got error “This service cannot be started in safe mode"attempting to start the service EventSystem with arguments” in order to run the server. {1BE1F766-5536-11D1-B726-00C04FB926AF}

DCOM got error “This service cannot be started in safe mode"attempting to start the service netman with arguments” in order to run the server. {BA126AE5-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

I’m aware that “netman” has to do with managing network connections, and in safe mode network is disabled. But the term “server” throws me off; does it literally mean it is trying to run a server or establish connection to one? I’m running XP Pro SP3, and my system shouldn’t be connecting to any servers.

Could someone shed some light on this?

DCOM stands for Distributed Component Object Model. COM it’s basically the replacement for OLE. Whilst it’s true the COM objects can be run across the network - Distributed COM - they also work locally. That is, one COM object can be acting as a server for a client COM object on the same computer.
