Allow Specific URLs [Resolved]

I’m trying to update a new installation of Windows XP and this Firewall is completely different to any others I have tried.
Several Window XP updates have failed.
The Error message gives the following info:
When accessing the Update site, you receive the 0x80072EE2 or 0x80072EFD error. (Resolution 1) Last updated : 10/21/2005 Print | Close

Problem description
This error may occur if your Internet connection or configuration is preventing access to the Update site.

Applicable operating systems
Windows 2000
Windows XP
Windows Server 2003

Resolutions

  1. A misconfigured Proxy/Firewall can cause this problem. Double-check the Proxy/Firewall settings.
Add the following urls to the exception list within your Firewall/Proxy:
    http://.update.microsoft.com
    https://
    .update.microsoft.com
    http://download.windowsupdate.com
For help configuring Proxy/Firewall refer to documentation or contact the manufacturer.

(:AGY) I can’t see anywhere to allow this - any solutions please?
Regards
David

Hi and welcome David,

You need to setup two allow rules in the network monitor that have the following configurations:

Rule 1:
Action : Allow
Protocol : IP
Direction : In
Source IP : Any
Destination IP : Host name: http://*.update.microsoft.com
IP Details : Any

Rule 2:
Action : Allow
Protocol : IP
Direction : In
Source IP : Any
Destination IP : Host name: https://*.update.microsoft.com
IP Details : Any

These should be above the block rule in the list of netwok monitor rules.

Hope this helps. If you need help setting these up feel free to ask.

Wow, Mike!
This must be the quickest response I’ve ever had to a problem.
I’ve done your suggestions and now waiting to re-install the XP updates that failed.
Many thanks
David
