Advice

I have a friend with a laptop running Vista. This laptop has 512MB RAM. :-\ So I plan to install more, if I can.

First: is there anything I should know before buying memory?
Second: is it possible to put more memory in a laptop?
Third: is NewEgg a good place to buy it?

Another question:

She has young kids (4-7) who like to play games. As you might imagine…the laptop is filled with junk.
Are there any free programs that can help solve this problem?

Thank you for your help (if you reply :P)!

I’m happy to see all the replies pouring in. 88)

Hi Laserwraith, your friend might appreciate your cleaning out of the (Junk) on her lappy but her kids will hate your guts, do you really want to go that route?

  1. Find answers for these;
    What does the user require?
    What does the BIOS support?
    How many slots are there?
    Buy branded.
  2. Yeah, sure its easy
  3. Don’t know

Lol…I cleaned 1GB+ of junk using CCleaner, and 100+ reg errors.

The user wants to play videos without the sound being way ahead of the screen…etc. Not perfect playing needed, but, well, reasonable.

Umm…how do I find what BIOS supports?

I haven’t opened it yet, so I don’t know how many slots.

Thanks!

Another thing:

I was wanting something free that can either (1) restore the computer each startup, or (2) Limit program installations. For free.

Check with ‘EVEREST’.

Second: is it possible to put more memory in a laptop?

Third: is NewEgg a good place to buy it?

CCleaner.
I recommend you reinstall Windows.
And then use ‘MS Windows SteadyState 2.5’.

Yes, there is a free program to solve that problem.
you can control almost whatever you want.
you can restore the computer each starup.
you can limit program installations.
and more…

‘MS Windows SteadyState 2.5’

First: is there anything I should know before buying memory?
What you're looking for. a basic, medium, or high-end system
Second: is it possible to put more memory in a laptop?
Normally yes. but it depends. a normal laptop has 2 slots for memory. But as you're having 512mb at the moment, it could be that there are 2x256mb in there, meaning that you will have to throw away 1...
Third: is NewEgg a good place to buy it?
Don't know...

Thanks for the replies. I’ll look into SteadyState.

They just need a medium/regular system.

If they don’t still have the manual, how should I see what kind of memory to get? Just open it up and see what they already have?

And is it best to have the same size and brand of memory in? Or can it be different?

That’s why I told you check with ‘EVEREST’.
If EVEREST doesn’t show you exact informations for the memory, ask her about model number of the laptop.
And then you can find it.

run EVEREST:
for memory.
Run EVEREST>Motherboard>SPD

for motherboard.
Run EVEREST>Motherboard>motherboard

And is it best to have the same size and brand of memory in? Or can it be different?

I don’t recommend you install the different memory, it doesn’t work properly.
(make blue screen, unknown error, unstable etc)

Check following things.

1.memory slots 2 or 4?
2.does MB support the capacity of memory up to 2GB or 3GB, 4GB?
3.Same size(GB) , same brand, same type.
4.same Manufacture Date.(including week)- only for buying a pair of new momories.

ex) SAMSUNG 2GB PC2-6400 DDR2 SO-DIMMS (800MHz) 200PIN

Thanks Creasy.

We meet each Monday for other reasons…but this time she forgot to bring her computer… 88)

So I’ll have to wait until next Monday, or some other time.

Everest is a nice app, i once got it free with a mag, although id forgotten it. A brief visit to the manufacturers website can tell you a lot. also http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
