670,000 files, huh?

Been having computer problems for the last 3-4 weeks. My DSL link always seems busy.

I’ve tried running 5-6 different malware/rootkit/virus scanners, including CCE. Nothing has ever been found.

When I got up today I downloaded the newest copy of the MS Safety Scanner and ran a Complete Scan. Again. For the 10th time.

The Complete Scan finds, get this, over 670,000 freaking files! And it ran for over 4 hours! In the end it finds zero(0), zilch, nada problems. Not one. Does this file count seem a little wacky?

Now I’m losing it. I got a system with a problem. I can see the results of the problem (very busy DSL – it’s blinking like a freaking strobe light some days). But for the life of me I can’t find anything wrong (according to the various scanners). I even tried a run through MS Baseline Security Analyzer. No issues found.

Anyone run into anything similar? Huge number of files? No malware or anything else found? Busy DSL with FF open but no pages loaded? Where’s Captain Valium when you need her? Arrrgghhh.

Thank you for any help or pointers you might be able to provide. I’m at wits end.

Bob

It propably wont make you feel better but I have over 1 million files

Did you try unplugging the router for a couple of minutes and then plug it back in?

Also you can call your DSL company too? equipment does degrade over time. It may be on there end.

Problem mostly fixed using AdBlock. Woohoo. Nothing like the brute force approach.

Found a great way to see what URLs a page opens – use Tools/Web Developer/Network in FireFox.

670,000 files ? I suggest you run CCleaner.

Turns out MS SS searches its own data files. Must be a switch somewhere to turn this feature off.
Mod edit: Fixed the quote tags, Captainsticks.

Hi Bob101,
I have never used MS safety scanner, but can’t you just remove it from your ‘Programs And Features’?
It expires after 10 days from being downloaded anyway.

Kind regards.

Hi, I took the brute-force approach and un-installed the whole SS thing. Maybe not the best approach but ■■■■ effective. Bob
