64-Bit Firewall on WIN XP Laptop Killed IP Connectivity

I mistakenly downloaded the 64-bit version of the Comodo Firewall, and tried to install it on a WIN XP Home laptop.

It didn’t install (of course), but now the laptop is unable to connect to the Internet using either Wi-Fi or Ethernet. The Wi-Fi or Ethernet link is established, but no IP address is set up.

Can anyone please advise how to repair this situation?

Thank you.

Have you tried right clicking on the Local Area Connection Icon in the task bar and selecting “Repair”

Yes, thanks. It tries the repair but after running a while it fails with a message to the effect that an IP address could not be established – even though the Wi-Fi link shows a good connection.

Same with an ethernet connection.

What happens if you do “ipconfig /renew”(no quotes) from a cmd prompt(start, run, cmd)
Also what does it say if you type in “ipconfig /all”
Have you re-booted your router and/or modem since as this may help(it seems like a dhcp problem)

ps Welcome to the forums

Thanks for the reply. I’ll have to wait to do that until I can get to my laptop again.

I did re-boot the laptop, but the problem continued. The DSL modem works fine with other PCs at the same location, so it doesn’t seem to be involved.

Below is the result of running those two commands. Hope that will tell you is going on…

Thanks.

This looks like it is a corrupted winsock/winsock2

Try from a command prompt “netsh winsock reset” press enter, then re-boot.

If this fails you could try to reset the TCP/IP protocol

Command prompt “netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt” enter/re-boot

Thanks for your suggestions, both of which I tried – but still have the problem unfortunately. Can you think of anything else to try?

Try going into Control Panel------>Network Connections----->Right click on each Local area connection and select properties then configure and try troubleshoot or maybe try re-installing the drivers.

Have you tried doing a system restore to before you had the messed up install, might be worth a shot.

I`ve been looking at a few problems similar to this and one was the router not releasing the IP address(DHCP) properly. It was solved by reseting the router,i.e by holding a pin/pencil into the reset part normally located at the back of the router.

Have a read of this http://www.anetforums.com/posts.aspx?ThreadIndex=28415 there are several things you can try like removing the wireless card, rebooting, puting it back in etc.
