Windows Vista Migration [Community Poll]

I don’t plan on Moving to XP anytime soon but I’ll wait to hear everyone’s feedback after the release and decide from there. I tried the XP 64-Bit Edition and wasn’t impressed in the least.

Does XP stand for Xceptionally Prone?

Either that or Xtremely Precarious

I would not switch into Vista to play newer games. Just having Vista on my computer is already similiar to running Doom on medium settings. Imagine playing a new game on an average PC with Vista on it. It will undoubtedly choke. Like what comicfan2000 said, we need not worry (at least for the next 4 years). All newer games will definitely support Win XP. To me, the DirectX 10 stuff is not much of a significance. I’d rather run the game smoothly than having it running on the best settings and see my PC choke.

OS 2, without a doubt would be a hammer to crush the others. Unfortunately we have the , “I can’t change the channel without the remote” syndrome all through the technological world. Run a command? Open what? etc…Now we must choose the worst of the two evils instead of what is good. I actually have people complain because having to do a few clicks to get into a folder makes them angry. ??? I always tell them, I never felt clicking a mouse was too tedious. I would assume then they can’t wait for the day the virtual 3-d OS controlled at the speed of thought, not touch , comes into play. But on the other hand would question if they would have the brain capacity to use it. Where was I going with this…Oh yeah, if you must choose between the newer \somewhat newer 9x family or NTFS, I would go to 98 before touching ME again, ME is not an OS in my opinion. Out of the 9x versions into ntfs, I would have to say 2000 or XP over any. I don’t care for Vista and I predict the end of the world, Gates will rise from ashes , laughing, as the moon is engraved with the Windows logo so every time we look up at night, we will see it. We will not be allowed to say Linux or be sent to the MS pits where we are forced to use Windows ME for a year. Vista will be tattooed on our heads and we will no longer have social security numbers, we will be given key codes and go through a validation process! Ok a bit extreme I know.

No tattoos.

Hey Paul,

There is somehting I don’t understand. Why isn’t Windows ME a true OS? I mean compared to Win 98, there were changes made to it, such as the System Restore thing. I have been using Win ME for 6 years and seriously I love it. With the XP hoo-ha all the way, I think it saved Win ME. I have in one instance plug a thumdrive containing trojan into a Win ME system and that trojan did nothing. My guess is that it only worked on Win XP. Seriously, I love Win ME and was somewhat hesitant to switch to XP. I only did this year because of 2 reasons:

  1. I bought a new laptop and XP came with it.

  2. I find softwares nowadays are only supporting XP in their newer version. Initially it did not matter but after 2 years of enduring the pain, I finally decided to switch to XP this year.

I don’t know what to say really except that I had dealt with and had ME for quite some time and the operation was terrible. I too was hesitant on XP when it came out but after using it for a while and then going back to ME once in a while on my other pc, getting numerous errors , unstable game play, among many other issues, I could not stand ME and couldn’t when I had it. 98 was by far a more stable version and ME was supposed to be an enhanced 98, which many 98 users too said they hated ME. If you have had no trouble with it, that’s great but many who did have it, dropped it like a hot potato for XP or in fact went back to 98. ME was a sad attempt to bridge the 9X and NTFS gap and a final nail in 9X coffin, but failed with all the incompatability issues , the corrupt system restore which was finally fixed after oh, a couple of years or so, very bad security, unstable graphics and did not satisfy many 98 users. Many didn’t feel it was even worth it to upgrade. I had so many issues with ME , nightmares if you will, with running any high end applications which XP seems to handle far better. NTFS is a more secure file system to say the least. Even MS admitted ME was made perhaps too quickly , however finding this article from years ago may be impossible. I will admit that XP has it’s major issues also , like having SP1, 2. Basically a rebuilt basic OS system due to vulnerability which is sad to say the least. Perhaps Vista, being beta put out to the users, MS may in fact be doing the right thing, this time they may get most of the bugs out instead of selling us unstable, basically untested betas called full versions for 300.00, and then as we pay for the OS we are testing it for them , while we report all their goofs and tolerate the shortcummings and wait for something safe and stable. So this time, they may spare us the heartache a bit I suppose. But I still don’t like Vista. lol.

Nah… I’m not that ancient… I’ll be 30 next month.
But I have been using computers since I was 6. Started with an Apple IIe in 2nd grade. I still have an AM486/133 stowed away as a collectors item, it was of course modernized a bit… you wont see many VLB systems mounting 6.5GB UDMA66 2MB drives in them. ;D

OS/2 had the nicest thing in the world for a system specialist… config.sys/autoexec.bat. :stuck_out_tongue:
Actually it’s still used today, most banks will only run OS/2 for their servers and internal PCs. Unfortunately I’ve seen ATM machines that still run Win95 though… hehe

Windows Vista has actually improved its object orientation compared to Win XP, and you can tell by its search engine. The type of metadata it can now search hints to the extra properties that each file has, but it’s still not comparible to either OS/2, BeOS, or even NeXT. Even Solaris does a better job than any version of Windows ever will.

But if you want to run Crysis or UT2007 at their max settings you’re going to need to have Vista to do so (DX10/WGF).
Actually, I should add that all the games that I’ve installed under Vista 5456 so far have run just as fast if not faster than under Win XP. And the interesting thing is that all the drivers on my system are all unoptimized betas lacking some capabilites. I’m pretty sure that Vista will be hauling ars when the drivers get finalized.

I have not encountered any problems running games though. The OpenGL support on the latest Vista Forceware works pretty darn well, I was expecting it to crawl since it not accellerated at the moment. But I guess the under pinnings of Vista make the driver work at about the same speed as accellerated OGL does under XP. Like I said before Chronichles of Riddick runs REALLY well, with all setting maxed out on a 7900GT@520/1500.

Edward

Did you also read that WGF may be taken right out of the picture? Do you think this would be the right thing to do? I personally do, and would say it’s about time. Thoughts?

Paul

or, dare I say it - Intuition, TripOS, Amiga OS, call it what you will - it had it before the others even dreamed it!

Ah, history! It makes a great teacher, but a lousy master.

Ewen

I dunno… why don’t you have a poll on it? ;D

I don't know, that may be a bit over the top having a poll on the polls themselves, I say we take a poll on your idea to see if having a poll on Justin's polls may in fact be a good idea. ::)

Paul

Hmm… I see what you mean. But, we could narrow down even further & have a poll to see if we should have polls on polls. :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t know, to break the monotony of it all, I say we VOTE on having taken polls on polls on polls.

Paul

Vote? I’m not sure about that… we would need to take a poll on it.

Lolllll.

Justin will probably be thinking, “I had to ask.” Well, if nothing else, I think Justin should get the idea that we think the polls are a great idea.

Or are they? lolll

Cheers,

Paul

Who can start a poll? And since it’s general discussion, off topic, if I wanted to say, start a poll on Donald Trump’s hair piece, not that I would, yikes, but that would be in fact, allowed? I mean without the obvious garbage that wouldn’t be allowed but tolerable topics?

Paul

I think anybody can create a poll (unless they changed it). I’ve seen some new users create them by mistake.

Ok, I ask because I do have the option. I don’t want to waste space on polls that wouldn’t matter but have had a few ideas prior I would have liked to create within reason.

Thanks,

Paul

Good idea

To get back on the subject of Vista, unless you guys want to do a poll on staying with the polls discussions… ;D

Here is an article that might help you decide. Pros and Cons included.
