Do you use a Hosts file and if so which one? Lets see which is the most popular, best kept up to date, you trust the most etc, etc, etc.
I use the MVPS form A detailed guide for using the MVPS HOSTS file
All suggestions whatever they may be regarding the use of the Hosts file are welcome (CNY)
Customized Hosts file, with over 138.000 entries. I use Hostsman to maintain it. All entries have 0.0.0.0 before the domain to be blocked. That way, there won’t even be a loopback.
i use mvps, hphosts and spybots hostsfile and hostsman to maintain them. i select the action owerwrite in hostsman when updating mvps and hphosts to avoid the hostsfile grow endlessly and be outdated, the spybot hostsfile is removed everytime you update the two others so then i use to merge it with the others, in other words immunize with spybot again everytime one or both of the others is updated.
mvps hostsfile hasnt be updated so very much lately so i was considering to stop using it and i dont know who is making it either and there is probably not possible to submit sites to be added or to request removal of sites.
hphosts is the best if you ask me but i have heard some people say that it blocks too much but it doesnt matter to me because i just disable the hostsfile with hostsman when it blocks sites i want to visit. it also blocks much more ads than the others and that is important to me because looking at all this flashing ads is disturbing and takes away the attention from what is interesting on the sites i visit, it is also possible to submit sites and request removal of sites to hphosts. i have submitted some sites to hphosts and i hope others will join the hphosts forums and submit malicious sites, adservers and others because in that way we help protect eachothers privacy and security and not only ourself. the sad thing is that it blocks some of my favorite torrent sites like mininova, btjunkie and thepiratebay but i fully understand why as this sites has a heavy bunch of infected downloads.
spybots hostsfile is usually updated once a week but it wont give you so much protection and blocks much less ads and malicious sites than the other two hostsfiles. in my opinion spybots hostsfile is almost useless but i use it anyway because one malicious site added is better than nothing ;D
I was trying to block some sties in a computer of another employee. And I noticed it returns back to normal. He’s not computer literate. Could the erasure of the sites I put there be related to Virus or Norton 360 ?
new to this? why not try it? you wont regret ^_^
the less flashing ads the better, that is just my opinion. i also want to avoid seeing this malicious sites even if i visit some of them by purpose just to check if i should submit them to hphosts. if some of you know about malicious sites that are not in hphosts then please tell me so i can submit them. it is fun to fight this stupid malware makers :■■■■
i havent seen so very many ads in ages exept when i searched for my username on google, i submitted the adserver to hphosts afterwards. why dont you join the hphosts forums? to try to help to break the leg of the malware makers :-TU
i think i have heard that comodo firewall includes this untrusted “ask toolbar”, the “ask” site is blocked by hphosts. why dont comodo use google toolbar or such wich is safe (as i know)?
The Ask toolbar install is optional so you don’t have to install it.As a user of Opera I never concern myself with junk toolbars and the likes, they ain’t happening.
The benefits of a hosts file are twofold.Firstly they block some of the worst malware/crapware sites from ever loading, plus secondly if you do happen to pick up a trojan it prevents it phoning out for more malware from those same sites.
