What is definition of "Installer or Updater"?

Hi all,

I wanted to install a program today. I trust it but do not want to let it go to Internet.

While installing, Defense+ kindly asked me what I want to do. I selected “Installer or Updater” option and allowed it. But, what is it? It reached to Internet from port 80 and CFP did not notify me.

Is this normal? Are they same, “trusted for Defense+” and “trusted for Firewall”?

What is your firewall setting? “Installer or Updater” just means a program that will install or modify several files, and stops the D+ popup occurring for each one. Shouldn’t allow internet access unless there is something in your network rules to allow it. I put a “block and log all” rule at the end of my network application rules just in case. Do you have anything in the firewall log?

I thought it was “installations mode” that stopped pop-ups. So why have an “installer or updater”? Does it just make it ask if you want installation mode?

My understanding is that a single program can be designated to be an installer or updater and maintain those settings, but several programs can be installed if you switch to installation mode. Not much in the help file though.

I think install mode grants both defense+ and firewall rights to the given application (temporarily of course). A lot of installers want to connect out. Dunno why. But if its legit software, I usually dont care. Some setups even fail if you block network acces for them. If you want to enjoy the benefits of the installer mode (eliminating defense+ popups for the setup process) but also blocking the network acces try putting the firewall to ‘block all’ while instaling.

I use CFP with default settings. I do not add anything to application rules. I only select predefined rules like web browser or e-mail client etc. My applications do not need extra rules.

However, the application I installed today, was first for my computer and does not have any rule.

Interesting! Can anyone agree with Blas?

I don’t think that the Installation mode has anything to do with the firewall. It only disables defence+ (temporarily).

Thanks Mike. I checked out the topic. But there is no brilliant info.

I think the answer is in the description: Installer or Updater

Which files update without internet access?

As far as I can tell selecting this does allow internet access to files - for example in my defence+ settings “Windows Updater Applications” appear to have been automatically set to “Installer or Updater”.

:SMLR

Good approach!.. This is rational.

My “Windows Updater Applications” setting also is the same. This is default setting for Defense+.

IMO, installer and updater functions must be detached from each other. “Updater” is definitely internal function. You already have an application and you are updating it. Naturally, it needs to go to Internet. But “Installer” may mean that you are running the application as first.
