What are 'Verified Official Site - Sponsored' sites doing in my search bar? [merged topic]

Just noticed this today, a site called ‘Dollar.com’ shows up in my hot bar/search bar. It says ‘Verified Official Site - Sponsored’ ?

It’s very frustrating because I go to a lot of sites with D as the first letter, and that keeps coming up. I tried clearing history completely but it’s still there.

I don’t really understand you so I will just post:

chrome://settings/searchEngines

or it might be bookmarked, if so, the easy way to get rid of it, is going to the website, click the star in the right side of address bar or [Ctrl+D] → Remove

or check your extensions chrome://extensions/

first this new theme, now I get sponsored links on V, S, D, F, R and other letters.

Comodo is trying hard to get me to delete this (formerly awesome) browser.

Can we disable them somehow?

I don’t think it’s from comodo, I don’t have such things!
Scan your pc …

the old theme is Here and
WebStore themes
and
Here

I looked in the search engines and extensions and didn’t find anything. I even checked my extensions update history to see if one of them snuck it in there, but they haven’t been updated recently.

So not sure where it’s coming from.

could you print-screen/screenshot the issue?

Your computer might be infected with a Hijacker which can change the browsers settings and preferences or and adware did infect your PC.
If you have an antivirus can you please do a scan for malwares!
and then
Please use AdwCleaner to remove any adware/hijacker etc. if you are infected. The possible infections can show you these kind of staffs.

it’s not malware, here’s the news on the official comodo website

Starting from v.36.1, Comodo Dragon provides the 'Official Site Suggestions' feature to display sponsored links for web sites to users when they type matching keywords into the browser omnibox. For instant, you are going to visit “Amazon”.com. Start typing “amaz”, the Comodo's Official Site Suggestions feature will be activated and the user will be navigated to the sponsored link.

so whenever I want to go to reddit, for example, I type “r” in the bar and get some sponsored “riteaid.com” link instead. the problem is — it’s not “suggestions” as they call it and you can’t turn them off, they’re literally ads. try typing “f”, you’ll get a fedex sponsored link, when you click it, you don’t even go to the fedex website, first it takes you to jdoqocy.com, which isn’t a site at all, it just redirects you through.

Microlap is right, I get those same suggestions “riteaid”, “fedex” etc. Are your guys’ browsers up to date?

Anyway if this really is by Comodo, i’ll be going back to chrome real quick. I tried it in chrome and didn’t get these “suggestions”.

I’m not getting what you’re telling me, give me a print-screen from your PC;
what you showed me is an search engine, anyway if I type “amaz” I get an sugestion - amazon.com / “yah” - yahoo.com => verified adtrust, that’s the only things I get … (after typing three/four letters).

try chromium secure.

My browsers are up to date.

Your computer might be compromise, did you download CD from secure sites?
Other software that you’ve installed on your system might have ad-ware!

try disable all plugins and extensions and restart, to be sure is not one of them.

good luck!

think of it like this - if you NEVER go to amazon and have another sites on A which you visit regularly, you’ll get them up top in the search box, and then the search results from google. this one is always on top even if you never used the site and you can’t delete it.

yes I have a perfectly clean pc. this is just a comodo dragon thing.

I also get this.

I understand, but I don’t have it lol ;D 8)
On chromium I don’t even get the ad-trust suggestions …
And I’m using Comodo DNS!

sorry I couldn’t give screens earlier
here, for various letters:

WOW
try this settings:

[ol]- chrome://settings/ → Show advanced settings… [01_ChromeSettings.jpg]

  • chrome://omnibox/ → test your omnibox, and see the results [02_ChromeOmnibox.jpg][/ol]

Or go to chrome://flags/ → click [Reset all to default], and restart.

read this:

http://www.chromium.org/omnibox-history-provider

http://browsernative.com/delete-omnibox-suggestion-history-276/
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/4N5ziVpQo0M

So in short words, select and press Shift+delete, or Clear data(history and autofill), or delete the historyprov … file from Userdata folder …
Good Luck!

They don’t go away. You have to delete every one of them manually two(!) times, and after dragon restarts they’re back.

by the way thanks for your help

LAMFO I guess it’s time for a new browser, jesus christ how horrifying. This is - literally - worse than google chrome, I switched to dragon to avoid getting tracked and traced + advertisements, guess that was a long shot.

I also have this problem, I am getting links from Statefarm, Verizon and others, it all happened after the last update. The first thing Comodo has to do is to warn users of this new form of advertising in their browser and not just push it as if nobody was going to notice it.

I understand that Comodo has to make money to be able to develop the browser but redirecting people to pages they don’t want to go does not seem ethical to me, you are wasting people’s time.

I rather put up with a toolbar than this, Comodo, if you are listening, don’t do this, don’t make people’s Internet browsing slower because we will uninstall your browser. :-TD

I am seriously willing to pay a dollar or two for a browser like this if they remove all advertisement tricks, as it is now, it can’t be used.

I’m used to typing “en” to get to engadget.com … because of this new system that took me to enterprise.com …so now I have to type “eng” to get to engadget, might not seem like a big deal but when you’re so used to typing only “en” and then enter, it kinda sticks…

If it’s not possible to turn this off, and if they won’t fix it in future releases, then I am done with Comodo dragon.

Edit: And I used to use d for dn.se but now that takes me to dollar.com god ■■■■ this *******
