It behaved for about a day and it started doing it again. I’have too many bookmarks saved to have to remove it and re-install. What else might be the hang-up?

This is possibly happening due to some unknown corruption in the user profile.
Export your bookmarks to a HTML file before trying a fresh re-install including Dragons user profile.
You can then easily import your bookmarks from that file into the new Dragon.
The Export/Import as a HTML file instructions are near the bottom of the page in the link below.

Note: I always recommend regularly exporting bookmarks to a HTML file for safe keeping.

Finally got around to exporting my bookmarks and a fresh install. All is good in the world again.
