Update failed. Antivirus engine is not initialized!

I’m trying to do a virus scan of my computer and this is the message that keeps popping up when I try. What does it mean? ???

Hi and welcome JDunlap,
Some extra information about your system might help in diagnosing the issue.
Operating system and CIS version?
Do you have any other active antimalware programs?
Has this previously worked correctly or is this a new install?
Does a system reboot help?
Or any other information you consider relevant.
Thanks.

My operating system is Windows 7. This has never happened before. It’s been working good up until now. No other active anti-malware programs. System reboot doesn’t help at all. And I’m sorry but I don’t know what CIS is.

CIS is short for Comodo Internet Security.

Have you tried the diagnostics utility?

Oh, this is what I have:

Product Version: 5.12.256249.2599
Virus Signature Database Version: 0

Is that what you meant?

I ran the diagnostics utility and it said it didn’t find any problems with my installation.

Hi JDunlap,
It appears as if something has become corrupt with your DataBase file.
Please try the following,
Boot into Windows Safe Mode.
Copy the bases.cav file from C:\Program Files\COMODO\COMODO Internet Security\repair folder to the C:\Program Files\COMODO\COMODO Internet Security\scanners folder, replacing/overwriting the existing file.
Reboot normal, then try to manually update the DataBase.
Hope it works, good luck.

LOL Captain, I’m not very computer savvy so if you could be so kind, could you dumb that down for me a bit? I’m sorry, it’s just that I don’t really understand what I need to do.

JDunlup Hi!
Bases.cav copy the file to another location and rename it to bases.old. Reinstall the CIS and paste file bases.old. Restart the computer. This must be done to update the interpretation offline. I advise you to put the CIS 5.10

sigh

That was even more confusing…

What is confusing?

Need to change the file name for manual update

When you first install the CIS 5.10 shows Virus Bases 1. Then update online. Never had no problems.

Hi JDunlap,
I am not sure how to explain what I suggested in reply 5 any easier, sorry.

Another way would be to do an uninstall/reinstall.

Is using Version 5.12 just a personal preference?
Thanks.

Version 6 is available
