Hi! Thanks for the new release, this was definitely quicker than the previous updates and i’m glad you could do it at a quicker pace. I’ve got an issue when opening private browsing though, the tracking protection is always off, and i have to double-click on it to change it to green ON, and if i open a new private tab it’ll reset to OFF. I really doubt it’s working correctly, anyone having a similar issue?
Hi.
Open about:config
and make sure that privacy.trackingprotection.pbmode.enabled
is set to true.
BTW, you can enable tracking protection also when not using private browsing: set privacy.trackingprotection.enabled
to true.
Thank you for the reply. I’m sure that was enabled by default, and the option in settings is ticked as well. I’m not sure why it keeps behaving this way, always a red icon. Anything else i might try?
You can try to reinstall CID or remove your profile. You may want to backup your bookmarks and passwords before doing that.
Sorry it has taken so long to respond to this post. Because of the holiday, I haven’t had a chance to check in on the forum. I have to agree with Yashiro that the new tab function is not working correctly with the Tracking Protection feature. I will give an example to explain. Refer to following images below: Step1, Step2, Step3 and Image4. I will basically repeat what is on the images below for the benefit of those readers that are using a different language.
In the Step1 image, opening a new tab shows that Tracking Protection is OFF with an option to ‘Turn Tracking Protection On’, even though there is a checkmark in the box next to ‘Use Tracking Protection in Private Windows’.
The Step2 image shows that clicking on ‘Turn Tracking Protection On’ results in the red box with “OFF” inside changing to a green box with “ON” inside. Clicking on this also removes the checkmark from the box next to ‘Use Tracking Protection in Private Windows’.
In the Step3 image, I opened another new tab with the same results as in the Step2 image, except clicking on ‘Turn Tracking Protection On’ results in a checkmark added to the box next to ‘Use Tracking Protection in Private Windows’.
In Image4, another new tab was opened and clicking on ‘Turn Tracking Protection On’ results in the checkmark being deleted from the box next to ‘Use Tracking Protection in Private Windows’. I then went to a website using that same tab and Tracking Protection was still active even though there is no checkmark in the box next to ‘Use Tracking Protection in Private Windows’.
My conclusion is that ‘Turn Tracking Protection On’ is just a toggle for the ‘Use Tracking Protection in Private Windows’ checkbox and that Tracking Protection cannot be turned off using the ‘Use Tracking Protection in Private Windows’ checkbox.
Edit: Update: Except for Step1, none of the issues I discussed above will occur if privacy.trackingprotection.enabled is set to false in about:config. Refer to Image5 in my post below for some additional info.

This is an update to what I posted previously. Not everyone will get the same results that I posted above. This is because I had privacy.trackingprotection.enabled set to true in about:config. If you set privacy.trackingprotection.enabled to false, you will have an option to ‘Turn Tracking Protection Off’ when you turn ON Tracking Protection in the new tab. See Image5 below. With privacy.trackingprotection.enabled set to false which is the default setting, IceDragon 42 behaves much better when in the Private Browsing mode. The ‘Use Tracking Protection in Private Windows’ now works correctly and Tracking Protection will be disabled if there is no checkmark in the box next to 'Use Tracking Protection in Private Windows. Also, clicking on the ‘Turn Tracking Protection On’ will not remove the checkmark from the box next to ‘Use Tracking Protection in Private Windows’.

Thank you for your insights. I have tried what you mentioned but to no avail. In none of those scenarios did the private browsing tab start with tracking protection enabled, and even if i set it to ON and then open a new tab(same private window), it still shows OFF.
I’ve tried unchecking use tracking protection in private window but then i have to click twice every time on “Turn Tracking Protection ON” before it turns ON, and opening a new tab still shows it as OFF.
Yashiro, I agree with you. That is not the correct behavior when opening a new tab in Private Browsing mode if you have Tracking Protection enabled. Instead of a showing a red box with ‘OFF’ inside, it should be a green box with ‘ON’ inside and it should display ‘Turn Tracking Protection OFF’ instead of ‘Turn Tracking Protection ON’.
But you should just ignore all that and not bother with clicking on ‘Turn Tracking Protection On’. You are probably already browsing with Tracking Protection on. If you are not sure, you can verify that Tracking Protection is enabled by clicking on the shield icon in the address bar when you are on a website that isn’t secure. See Image-1 below. If you have Tracking Protection off, there will be no shield icon in the address bar when you are on an insecure website.
Hopefully, this confusing behavior will be fixed in the next release of IceDragon.

Thanks for this information. Indeed i noticed that the browser is blocking parts of the page that may track you, even if the page is showing “Tracking Protection OFF”
Hopefully this will be fixed in the next release.
Tracking Protection issues discussed above have been fixed in Comodo IceDragon v44.0.0.11. When in Privacy mode, opening a new tab displays the correct information. :-TU
Yes i confirm this issue has been fixed.
