Stop a program from calling home in CISver5...etc

Quick questions here. How can I stop a program from calling home in CISver5?

I am using a DVD Creator from Wondershare and it frequently calls home when I am using it (when online).

a) What will I look for in the Wondershare folder?
b) Hw can I block it in CIS v5? Blocked Files maybe…?

How can I make a certain address always “allowed” in CIS v5?

How can I do that? I have jotted down the website address/host name already. (maybe a procedure…)

Sorry for the newbie questions here. Tryin to keep it short/simple. I hope you guys don’t mind:-)

Thanks.

PS:

When I do photo-editing/video creation I turn-off frewall/hips and leave the AV just running. I also do that while “not” in the internet.

Is it still supposed to be running? Is it off when you exit? I remember I cannot use a video-editor because it will not open. It took a while so I restarted CIS and place the video-editor in trusted then “exit–CIS” again. After it the video-converted opened normal.

Care to comment on this…

Give the program that connects to the web the Blocked Application policy.

How to do that? Make sure the program is running. In CIS go to Firewall → Network Security Policy → Application Rules → Select → browse running programs → select the program → now choose “Use a Predefined Policy” and select Blocked Application.

That is protecting the PC ‘after’ the fact

How do you setup Comodo so it ‘Pops Up’ an ‘ask’ prompt BEFORE it connects to the Net?

So you can select to block it on the first run

thanks

What’s your firewall behavior settings?

General Settings == Custom Policy

Alert Settings == Very High (ICS unchecked) all others checked

If you want to block it before you run it just use browse instead of adding it from running processes. Just make sure you add the correct EXE from program files.

Also I thought custom policy mode gave you pop ups for all programs?? Do you already have a rule created for it??

Cheers
Shaun

Adding Word.exe via browse to the Application Rules still connects to the net with NO pop when I click ‘within’ MS Word ‘Connect to Microsoft Office Online’

I am on Custom Policy but it does NOT give me pop ups for all programs (wish it did)

I assume if the program is on Comodo Whitelist it does not give a pop up (very lame)

Comodo is not working as a Firewall App should - I have been using ZA for years and it would always give a pop-up for any app trying to access the net

I will ask you(Bruce) once again… what’s your firewall behavior settings?

I already answered this 2 posts above

Firewall Behavior Settings

General Settings == Custom Policy

Alert Settings == Very High (ICS unchecked) all others checked

thanks and sorry for this post below; I missed somehow your answer. Sorry once again

Nope. It is catching when it requests. It will only connect when you allow it. This is also known as Default Deny.

How do you setup Comodo so it 'Pops Up' an 'ask' prompt BEFORE it connects to the Net?

So you can select to block it on the first run

thanks

See the above.

You can also add a program like I described in the above when it is not running. Choose “Browse Files” instead of 'Browse running programs".

You can make a predefined policy to tell CIS to ask first.

Firewall > Network Sec. Policy > Predefined policies > edit > Give it a name >
add > action = ask > and then drag it to the top of the list > apply

Then you can go into your Application Rules > select your program >
edit > use a predefined rule > select the appropriate rule > apply

Hi EricJH,

It seems then that Comodo has a serious bug

My CIS - Firewall Behavior Settings

 • General Settings == Custom Policy
 • Alert Settings == Very High (ICS unchecked) all others checked

Let me elaborate

I have been using ZA for a while and when I do a simple MS Word test, ZA always comes up with a prompt on whether I want word.exe to connect via IE to the internet

TEST: Open MS Word → Goto ‘Help’ drop down menu → then select ‘Microsoft Office Online’

Using this test MS Word with CIS connects to the internet with NO Prompts (even with Custom Policy)

Is there an easy ‘global’ setting change I can make so that ANY app that tries to connect to the Net will ALWAYS ask for a prompt?

Thanks

Bruce, one post on this subject is sufficient. Please refrain from double-posting.

Check the image attached to this post. You will see that Word actually starts up another process; clview. May be there is a policy for clview in Application Rules?

Hi all;

Thanks for the replies here. Great learning. When I am connected to the internet and use a Microsoft app like MSWord/Powerpoint I use it in sandboxie but seldom do that…just pure surfing/downloading stuff.

I’ll observe some more.
