Stealth and port 21

Hi, I decided to give Comodo another shot. I am happy I did because unlike the other times I tried, I can now surf the net. I think the trick was

  1. install
  2. surf the net
    3 run the wizzards

Anyways I am pretty happy!!

I now have 2 questions:

When I run a firewall test online, it says my ports are closed and not stealth.

How can I stealth my ports?

My port 21 is open. How do I stealth port 21 with Comodo. Why is 21 open in the first place??

thanks for any help!!

Glad to hear it’s working better.

Re. port 21 not being stealthed - are you behind a router? If you are behind a router and use an online tool like ShieldsUp, the results you are seeing are the ports of the router, not the ports of your PC (unless you have forwarded the ports on your router). CFP stealths all ports by default.

Here are the results.

Open and Unsecure!

This port is not being blocked and there is a program accepting connections on this port.

This port is completely invisible to the outside world.

Closed but Unsecure
25 (SMTP Mail Server Port)

This port is not being blocked, but there is no program currently accepting connections on this port.

This port is not being blocked, but there is no program currently accepting connections on this port.

Secure
80 (HTTP)

This port is completely invisible to the outside world.

Closed but Unsecure
110 (POP3 Mail Server Port)

This port is not being blocked, but there is no program currently accepting connections on this port.

139 (Net BIOS)

This port is not being blocked, but there is no program currently accepting connections on this port.

Closed but Unsecure
143 (IMAP)

This port is not being blocked, but there is no program currently accepting connections on this port.

Closed but Unsecure

443 (HTTPS)

This port is not being blocked, but there is no program currently accepting connections on this port.

Test complete.

Reachable ports were found. If these ports were not deliberately left open, there may be a problem with your firewall operation or configuration.

I’m worried about the Unsecured results. and the port 21 being open

Hey Steveo,

What did you use to get these results - netstat?
Did you use an online test and if so, which one?
Are you behind a router?

Hi Panic,

I am behind a router.

I got the results here McAfee.com - File Not Found I clicked “portscan”

Thanks for your help

G’day,

This online test is scanning the ports of your router, not your PC. I ran this test and the results exactly reflected the port status of my router (with one curious exception - it said port 80 was open and it isn’t). I then re-configured my router to port forward all ports to the IP of a PC on my LAN running CFP. All ports then reported as stealthed, as expected.

If you open a command window (START - RUN - CMD) and enter the following command

NETSTAT -AN

this will produce a list of the active ports on your PC and their status. You will usually find some ports open to local addresses on your LAN (LAN browse, file and print share, etc.) and to the local loopback. Please bear in mind that if you have any app running that require a connection, they will be reported as well.

Let us know how you go.

Cheers,
Ewen
