Server Timing out

When I try to download my mail from the pop server through Thunderbird I get a Pop Server timed out message. What is causing this and what should I do to stop that error message? It happens when the Cavs email scanner is running.

This may be server specific, as I’ve been using CAVS/Thunderbird for retrieving emails for well over a year without issue.
