Sec. Shop. v1.1 build 97/CIS v6246 breaks Windows after update KB4022716[M2276]

A. THE BUG/ISSUE (Varies from issue to issue)

Can you reproduce the problem & if so how reliably?:

Uninstalled COMODO components one at a time (and also my other security software one at a time)
until I found out that Secure Shopping in CIS 10.0.1.6246 prevents computer from bootup after update
KB4022716

If you can, exact steps to reproduce. If not, exactly what you did & what happened:

1:Install CIS 10.0.1.6246 with secure shopping
2:Install Windows 10 update KB4022716 - For Win10 x64
3:Notice that after restart the screen remains black because somehow explorer.exe refuses to start.

One or two sentences explaining what actually happened:

See above for cause and below for solution

One or two sentences explaining what you expected to happen:

For explorer.exe to start and not hang up after the windows update.

If a software compatibility problem have you tried the advice to make programs work with CIS?:

Don’t know other solutions as the system is unusable with CIS after this update.

Any software except CIS/OS involved? If so - name, & exact version:

Most likely not - I have thoroughly tested.

Any other information, eg your guess at the cause, how you tried to fix it etc:

NOTE: Make sure prior to testing that you can boot into safe mode in Windows 10, otherwise you will not be able to
uninstall CIS!!! Also note that Windows Installer service is disabled by default in Safe Mode. To enable it in Safe mode:

  • Type this in a command prompt:
    REG ADD “HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\MSIServer” /VE /T REG_SZ /F /D “Service”
  • Then type also:
    net start msiserver
  • Type in CMD
    REG ADD “HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Network\MSIServer” /VE /T REG_SZ /F /D “Service”
  • Then Type also:
    net start msiserver

This enables Windows installer in Safe Mode so you can uninstall Secure Shopping there.

B. YOUR SETUP
Exact CIS version & configuration:

10.0.1.6246, mostly default configuration, changes only cosmetic.

Modules enabled & level. D+/HIPS, Autosandbox/BBlocker, Firewall, & AV:

AV, Firewall, AutoSandbox, VirusScope, Website Filtering

Have you made any other changes to the default config? (egs here.):

No

Have you updated (without uninstall) from CIS 5, 6 or 7?:

Clean installed

if so, have you tried a a a clean reinstall - if not please do?:

Tried a clean reinstall - that's why I noticed it was Secure Shopping

Have you imported a config from a previous version of CIS:
No

if so, have you tried a standard config - if not please do:
No

OS version, SP, 32/64 bit, UAC setting, account type, V.Machine used:

Win10 x64 build 15063.447, 64bit, UAC default, Admin account, no virtual machine

Other security/s’box software a) currently installed b) installed since OS, including initial trial security software included with system:

a=RansomFree b=?

I cannot attach CIS diagnostics because it would not allow me to boot at all after Secure shopping is installed.

Also if it helps I will link the changes in the Windows KB here for easier access:

With kb4022716 and CIS installed (only Firewall and Antivirus), Firefox (clean Profile) crashes. After uninstalling CIS, Firefox works again.

Just installed that update. Got the same issue, explorer wouldn’t start by itself. I had to manually start explorer using task manager. And the secure shopping service kept using 25% cpu. After uninstalling the service still remained, had to delete it with Killswitch. Now my system feels abnormal, system login is slow and for some reason the Photos app isn’t opening.

Ok just uninstalled all Comodo stuff, delete all folders and registry entries, and restarted to reinstall Comodo Firewall on proactive. With CF installed on the latest update, the system seems to be slow to login, but everything else is OK. The system was fast to login before the update with CF installed, and when I uninstalled CF on the new update.

Hopefully there are no Secure Shopping drivers still running in the background, I couldn’t find any.

reported thanks.

Disable csssrv in services from starting does the trick

That would probably fix the issue but will also disable Secure \Shopping completely.

On Win 7 you can boot in safe mode by pressing F8 at startup and then you can disable/uninstall Secure Shopping.

The issue is that Win 8.1 / 10 has the F8 key disabled by default - one of the
poorest decisions MS has taken, in my opinion. (In my case luckily I have found a workaround
to access safe mode after completing the registry change for Windows Installer - but with lots of
tweaking that non tech person couldn’t do.)

So now I am waiting for the fix for the black screen error in Secure Shopping and also the fix
I have previously reported with the flaw in the screenshot protection. - once these are solved
I can install Secure Shopping again in my system but until then it will remain uninstalled.

Should be fixed as CIS 10.0.1.6250 RC is released to fix this issue.

Thank you, i will test it.

Also, once the issues are fully fixed shall I delete the hosts entries:
91.209.196.83 download.comodo.com
91.209.196.83 www.download.comodo.com ?

Because once I put them there they don’t allow me to download the official full CIS version.

Thank you

P.S. - so far so good with 10.0.1.6250 RC - Thank you for all team’s intervention

Yes once the final stable version is released you would revert to using the normal non-test servers for checking for updates.
