Scheduled backups not running

I have not been able to get scheduled backup jobs to run. I have one daily job that should run as a simple copy, manually it works fine and everything is backed up properly. When the time that it is scheduled to run comes, nothing happens. Anyone have an idea what is going wrong?
Thanks, John

I have exactlty the same problem. I’m using Windows 2000 backing up to a network drive.

In my Application Event viewer it says “The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( ComodoBackupService ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: Backup Backup Laptop started.”

Any clues?

That is a common problem with this release.

I had a daily to disk and a bi-weekly to DVD-RW. The previous version worked fine. The new release would not work.

I finally dumped the new and reinstalled the older version 1.0.0.1. (This was several months ago.)

Thanks for the answer, hopefully it will be fixed in the next release. For now I am using a batch file that uses Robocopy.exe (From Microsoft’s Windows 2003 server resource kit) to do a copy of all the changed files on the drive to an eternal drive for backups. I have the bat scheduled to run every night and it is doing the job.

Is it possible to download the older version from somewhere?

New version 1.01.10 seems have not fixed the problem. I have Win 200 SP4 but I am not able to make scheduling work…
Anyone may help ?
Backup without scheduling is not so useful…

Question to the developers!
When will correct mistake in the program which does not enable to carry out Backup on a time-table? (:AGY)
Today set the latest version of the program, began to swing updates, but the program however copies on a time-table.
When to wait the working version of the program?

Alexey from Russia

Hi alesio

Welcome to the Comodo forums

I am not a developer - just a user of Comodo Backup.

Scheduled backups do work and they work well on v- 1.0.1.10. Please make sure that you have the backup service running and that it is on automatic. The service is called “comodoBackupService”. If you are not sure how to check it go to start > run > type in ‘services.msc’ (without the quotes) and you will be there.
I use the scheduled backups every day and they never fail me. I have XP SP2. both Home and Pro.
If you have any more problems let us know and someone on the forums will be able to help you.

When to wait the working version of the program?

I believe that the developers are now working on a new version of Comodo Backup but have not heard when this will be coming to us. In the meantime let us help you get v- 1.0.1.10 working.

John

With the older version I got several months ago I had NO problems in scheduled backups working. I installed version 1.0.1.10 on June 23rd and have 7 separate backups set up. (And I was VERY annoyed in that I had to RE DO all the backup settings. Before uninstalling the older version, I could not find a file that looked like a configuration file and the documentation says nothing about it either!) Some of the backup sets are to a local external drive, some to a network external drive.
To date, NONE that were to back up since the 23rd have done so.
I checked and the ComodoBackupService is already set for “automatic”.
I am using Win XP SP2.

What do I do now to get it to run on schedule?

Hello mahal

Go to your Comodo Backup folder in Windows Explorer or My Computer and see if there are any entries for the backups that you scheduled in your CmdBkpSvc.log. If Backup attempted to backup there will be errors in the log. If it did not attempt to backup then there may be no entries and we may have to do some checking on your install or your settings.
One thing you can check now is when you open Backup do you see “Service state running” or is it “stopped”? It should be running.

John

Below is a quote from one of the Backup developers.

We are going to release at least two version before Online Offering will be ready. The next version will have some minor fixes (including some fixes in the scheduler). The version after that should have re-done scheduling part that uses built in windows scheduler. It should greatly improve scheduling overall. Yet, it will break Windows 95/98/Me compatibility

Unfortunate their second planned release will break Win9X/ME compatibility, but time marches ever onward.

Hope this helps,
Ewen

JJasper,
Thanks for your acknowledgement of my problem.
service State is Running within the program and in Services (that is set to automatic there).
There are no auto attempts to do backups in that log file, only the stop and start lines when I rebooted on the 25th, then the manual backups I did today after I realized it did not do them automatically. And the two I mention below…

There is something VERY wrong though. The program screen only shows the last manual backup I did, the cmdbkpsvc log shows 2 more run later this evening (6 and 10:30pm) and those zip files are on the destination drives, but a third setup to run at 8pm is nowhere. I also found something in the Events log… Not from before today, but since I adjusted the times of backups today to see if it would back up. I also Un checked the “stop on error” box to see if that would make a difference.

There is an Event entry that says:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( ComodoBackupService ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Backup Docs Zipped to N started.

And the next Event says:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( ComodoBackupService ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Backup Docs Zipped to N completed.

There are identical Event entries for the other two, one that did back up and the other that did not.

Maybe I should uninstall it, reboot and reinstall? (and reboot again because it tells me I have to) Before I do though, is there a config file of some sort with all my backup sets in it, or do I have to re-do them all as I did when I went from the old to the new version? (A Royal PITA to do!)

Or, should I just go back to the old version? (I still have the installation file)

Thanks,
Mahal

So much to do, so little time…

I hate to see people lose out with their Win 98/Me systems too, but I have been there, done that. I was forced to go to Win 95 from OS/2 years ago to support clients with their funky Windows problems. And I still regret the day I had to do that… But as you said, time does march on and there is nothing we can do about. I just refuse to go to Vista til ALL the bugs are gone!

OS/2 was an absolute work of art - object oriented O/S that was configurable to the nth degree. Mind you, IBM couldn’t design a user interface to save themselves.

Is there that much time remaining?

Chers,

Maybe for some, but not all of us! (older than dirt here) :-X

Thanks for your comment on OS/2 – I agree about IBM. And I add to that - IBM did not know how/did not want to market to the masses. All they care about is corporate. And I think the MS upcoming Win95 caused them to fall back where the SOHO users were concerned. I believe they still have ongoing updates - for a fee - but I don’t have my original Warp 4 CD anymore, nor the inclination to go back to it. I have my hands full with XP Pro and its quirks.

And Comodo Backup. (:WAV)

Hello mahal

Can you check your registry for entries for Comodo Backup? You will find them in HKLM\Software\ComodoGroup\Comodo Backup.
This is also where your settings are saved. They will only show up here though if you have “service backup” chosen as opposed to “user backup”. You can save these keys and import them later if you want to save your settings.(If you have them), as unfortunately there is no config file that I know of.

Also have you deleted Launchpad? I had deleted all Launchpad info in the registry, but I had to reinstall Launchpad and just disable it to get Backup to work right.

Because you have no entries in the log file for errors it tells me that somehow Backup is not being contacted by the scheduler or that the backup scheduler is not running.

CmdBkStart.exe should be found in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and other entries for Comodo Backup are found in HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\Legacy_ComodoBackupService and HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ComodoBackupService. (or these could be controlset001 or 002 or both). There are also a few keys under HKey_Users but I think they are mostly duplicates.

If you decide to reinstall please make sure that you manually check to see if all these keys are deleted before reinstalling as I have found that even RegSeeker (my favorite registry cleaner) does not clean them all out (especially the Legacy keys).

One other thing about losing your settings. If you use a registry cleaner regularly it will take out the keys and delete all your settings if you do not put all of them in the exclude or exemption area. I found this out the hard way as every time Backup was scheduled and did not run I found that my settings were all missing. My cleaner had cleaned them out.

I still have Win98 installed dual boot with my XP Pro. It is the only one that has not crashed over the last year. I keep it because I may need to get on the internet at some point when both XP’s fail. It loads faster and shuts down faster. The only problem with it that I have is most new software will not work on it. Oh Well…

John

JJasper:

Thanks for all the details.

  1. All my backup sets are User and all are in the registry where you said they would be only if they were Service. Weird. I don’t even know what Service is used for, so don’t use it (and the docs don’t mention it or some other important info that should be there.) I did save them, but I wonder if they will work with the old version. I may just set up all the backups all over AGAIN to be safe.

  2. I have not deleted Launchpad, I use it. It is the easiest way to open Backup, from the task tray with a right click. I figured if Comodo included it with Backup, there must be a reason so I kept it.

  3. CmdBkStart.exe is NOT in the registry where you said it would be, but ComodoBackupService is in the other places. Strange since it is set for automatic in Services and running.

  4. I will definitely check the registry for these before I reinstall the old version. Which is what I am going to do. This is taking up way too much of my time to get a broken program to work. If the older version doesn’t work now either, I will have to look again for another backup program. Unfortunately, all this gives me qualms about using Comodo’s AV and firewall later. Or is the Backup program the only one that is not a priority of theirs?

  5. My reg cleaner doesn’t delete anything I tell it not to. It displays all the entries and allows me to decide what to do. I would not delete anything possibly shown from a legitimate, running program. (CCleaner - the best free cleaner available!)

  6. I hear ya on win98 boots faster than XP. But I am surprised about it not crashing. I had problems with 98SE so gladly went to XP Pro. (It wouldn’t Gracefully shutdown and the fix for it wouldn’t work either!) I think a lot may have to do with how a system is used (uptime etc) and the apps used.

Thanks!
mahal
Even less time now… (:SAD)

Hello mahal

I wouldn’t worry about the keys in the reg. being a little different. I gave you what I had for XP Home, and I see you are using Pro. Sorry about that :-[. In Pro it is still at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Run\CB Active User. If you do not have it at all that would explain why it does not run on schedule.

Sorry to hear that you do not have much success with Backup but I think a fresh install after a thorough registry clean would make a big difference. On both my Home and Pro the schedules work just fine but they did not always do so. I had to do some tinkering and cleaning and re-booting and finally they are doing what they are suppose to.

As for Comodo firewall I have it on both Home and Pro and again it is trouble free. Actually if you follow the install instructions to the letter and disable all other security programs when you install I think you will be pleasantly surprised with it. It may pay to read the forums on Comodo Firewall. I am using now version 2.4.18.184 download at http://download.comodo.com/cpf/download/setups/release/CFP_Setup_English_2.4.18.184.exe

Version 3 of the Firewall is still in Alpha so I would not recommend using it yet. I have not tried it but testers of it say it is awesome. Anti-Virus is still in Beta so you may want to wait for that as well.

Post back if you need any more help and if I am not able do it someone else will be.

John

Thanks, John. I will uninstall, clean up the registry and reinstall Backup when I have the time to do it all in one sitting. For now I will manually backup. I still look forward to a newer version of Backup with some of the rough patches cleaned up. I really do not want to go to another vendor if at all possible.

Thanks also for the info on the firewall and AV. I still have 417 days (as of today) on my ZAP subscription so it will be that many days before I will need Comodo’s Firewall. I will be trying the AV on a new laptop that I am doing research on at the present time. I will be getting it before the end of summer though. Giving the old laptop to hubby. (He always gets my old computers!) It is not a bad one though, still has a lot of life in it. I just want one that is lighter, bigger screen and has built in wireless! (Xtreme Notebooks is where I get mine. They still offer Win XP too!!)

Thanks again – I will be back if I run into problems again!

BTW, I love this forum – how it is set up and the functionality is GREAT!

I cured my scheduling problems by disabling the Launchpad apps from loading at startup using msconfig.

I then just located the exe for comodo backup, and made a shortcut to it on my desktop.

All seems to have been fine ever since.
