Same old iTunes issue

I’ve tried to use the CIS full suite multiple times in hopes that it would finally stop interfering with the use of iTunes. My ipod will not sync, wifi sync doesn’t work and the remote app doesn’t work. The introduction of web filtering looks very promising, but I can’t use the program if it interferes with iTunes.

I didn’t bother posting this in the bug report topic, if it hasn’t been fixed since version 5 it’s not going to be fixed ever. I’ve seen old threads that complain about the same issues I’m having, but they hardly get replies.

Well I seem to have fallen victim to that corollary of Murphy’s Law which states: “Right after you make a PIA of yourself on the Internet, you’ll find the solution to your problem”. And re-reading this thread now I’ve noticed that Ronny had mentioned one piece of the solution a page back (in Dec 2011).

I was experiencing extreme slowness of iTunes loading, but the worst problem was that iTunes would fail to see my iDevices and as a result I couldn’t sync or back them up. Further, sometimes Windows would not recognize that these things are Cameras. I believe the answer may be this simple: after launching iTunes with an iGizmo connected, go into Network Security Policy under Firewall settings and change all the Apple executables to Trusted Applications. Before, they were Custom, with various & sundry ports listed & whatnot. Well, I just Trusted (Predefined Policy) all of them:

Yeah with all those flippin’ executables, it’s a wonder the bloody thing works at all!

But not only does everything work, iTunes starts-up again very fast, where before it was taking a minute or more.

In the past when iTunes started “not seeing” my iPhone/iPad/iPods, I would do a System Restore to a point where it DID see them (e.g. a date when I did a backup) and recently not even that worked. I can only assume that somehow one of these things kept changing the comm ports and Firewall lost track of them (I had tried Training mode but that didn’t point-out any problems).

Anyway while I think it’s fixed, maybe it’s not, but for the time being I have a high degree of confidence in the above.

P.S. one more thing: for Windows to see a device as a Camera (it’s mounted & visible in Explorer) there apparently needs to be at least one photo on your iDevice. So Apple’s driver is very sneaky in not letting Windows at it until it satisfies Apple’s needs I guess.
