How often? I think a lot depends on user usage. Installing and removing lots of programs and or files requires more regular defrag.
I used to advise the home user to defrag about once a month.
Started with diskeeper myself, does a very good job.
Any of the ms defrag progs as far back as I can remember where all pretty marginal.
