Hello,
I have a desktop computer running windows xp professional with sp3. It is connected to the internet via a linksys wireless usb adapter. My other computer (a laptop) is running windows vista home premium and connects to the internet wirelessly. I have a linksys wireless router connected to the modem in the basement.
The desktop has a printer connected to it and both computers are connected together as a home network so that I can print from the laptop when need be (as long as the desktop is turned on). It took a little while to set the comodo firewall settings so that I could have them talk / ping each other and since then things have been working just fine.
However, I have been running comodo firewall version 3.14.147648.588. and updates for this version have been discontinued. I just never had the time to update the firewall software for either pc until now (I’m primary caregiver for both parents).
Anyway, I copied down all of the firewall settings on both of the pcs (my network zones; network security policy>global rules). I then created a restore point on the xp machine and then proceeded to update my product to the current version.
The problem is that once I was done I could no longer actually get to the internet with any browser (IE; firefox; google chrome) but I was able to ping the vista machine and the network connection icon states that I am connected to the internet. I was unable to ping the xp machine from the vista machine anymore either. I did go in and entered the information that was in the network zones and global rules on the xp machine but that didn’t help either.
I then tried disabling the firewall to see if I could connect but nothing so I then tried uninstalling the firewall and seeing if I could connect to the internet - nothing yet again. Finally I just did a system restore to return the pc to where it was prior to updating the firewall. Now I can connect to the internet again and both pcs can again talk to each other.
Why was I having these problems, exactly what did I do wrong and what do I need to do in order to be able to update my firewall on both pcs and have them continue to talk to each other and connect to the internet?
I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions that would help me to get the newest version of Comodo Firewall to work on both my XP & Vista pcs so that I can connect to the internet and get them to talk to each other as they are doing with the current and no longer supported version of Comodo Firewall.
I would really like to be able to use the supported and most current version of firewall but I need to be able to connect to the internet and have them talk to each other.
As you can see from my previous post I did try installing the newest version on the xp machine and then set up the network zones using the same settings as I had and have on the machines so that they do talk to each other and so that I can connect to the internet. But for whatever reason I could no longer actually get any web browser to work when I installed the newest version on the XP machine - however, my anti-virus was able to continue to connect and get updates — but that was all.
I was unable to ping the xp machine from the vista machine once I installed the newest software on the xp machine (never got to the point of installing it on the vista machine since I could not get it to work on the xp machine)
It would be so very much appreciated if someone could be of assistance.
Now uninstall comodo and use the CIS clean up tool in safe mode (press F8 when the computer boots). Now install CIS as admin (Please look carefully when you install CIS, so that you don’t install GeekBuddy if you don’t want to).
By the way you can’t import settings that are from CIS 3.14 to CIS 5.3. So you have to add everything that you had added before.
First, Let me verify your network environment
You have a XP Machine (Address A) that connects directly to the router (ROUTER)
Also You have a Vista Machine which connects to the router but also needs to access the XP machine for the printer
XP Machine w/ Printer - > Router
Vista Machine - > Router
To access the printer Vista Machine - > XP Machine w/ Printer
You had CIS 3.X but now you wanted to upgrade; so you uninstalled and ran this batch On The PC’s You are trying to install 5.X
If you have tried to import/export your configurations from 3.x to 5.x this isn’t recommended.
Also; Once you uninstall and restarted run the link above. and then restart; and then continue to install CIS 5.x
Also; Once you have restarted, You’ll get a “New Network Detected” > Click Ok (Don’t check any check box)
Go to CIS > Firewall > Network Zones > Add > Add New Network Zone > Name it 'Home" or something rather > Ok > Select ‘Home’ > Add > New Address > IPv4** Address > Enter The IP of the XP Machine > Ok > Add > New Address > IPv4** Address > Enter the IP of the Vista Machine > Ok > Ok > Apply (Until you get to the Main CIS Window) > Stealth Port Wizards > Define New Trusted Network > “home” > Ok
Thanks so very much for the assistance. I did uninstall the older version using Revo Uninstaller and then installed the newest version (don’t know that I actually installed it using the administrator rights - since I am the only person that uses the computers and have the administrative rights already).
I will try uninstalling the older version, restarting the pc and then running the clean up tool as suggested. I will then install the newest version.
As for importing the settings from the older version. I did not try to do that. What I did was to go in and add the settings manually - just as I had done originally when I first set up the 2 computers as a home network. I did export the setting from the older version but wasn’t so sure that they could be imported since they are 2 different versions so I just went in and added the information myself.
I did do as suggested for Network Zones however, my settings currently are set as a range of IP addresses and another setting for a single ip address - one for the vista machine and one for the xp machine.
I then went to the global rules and set it up to allow all outgoing requests if the target is in the home network > source address - any Destination - zone IP Details - any
I did the same with a rule to allow all incoming requests with same source; destination and ip details as just mentioned.
I also have a global rule to allow TCP or UDP in or out with source and destination address with an ip range and source port and destination port set at any. So I did that when I installed the newest version which is why I can’t figure out why the settings were not working.
However, I did not go to Firewall Behavior Settings > Advanced > uncheck “Block Frag. IP Datagrams”
I’m guessing that is where my problem was.
I will try these steps this time and will let you know if that resolves my problem.
I uninstalled the firewall on the xp machine and then restarted and then ran the cleanup tool exactly as was instructed. I then restarted the pc again and began the installation of the newest version.
After it was installed and the pc restarted I followed the rest of the steps for the network zones and the firewall behavior settings as well. I can ping the vista machine and the vista machine can now ping the xp machine and I can print a document from the vista machine to the xp machine which has the printer connected to it.
However…I cannot open any web browsers. I have tried the IE browser, Firefox browser and the Google Chrome browser and all I get is “This webpage is not available” The network icon that is located in the lower right hand of the desktop states that I have an excellent connection and if I use the “diagnose problem” on IE it states that there is no problem with my connection.
BUT I cannot get a webpage to open up to any website what so ever (including this website).
Ok; Can you do me a favor once again;
Is run this script and post the report on your next reply
From what it seems like that It’s a application rule error;
Did you import the configuration from the old version of CIS to new?
Also; If you add iexplore.exe / firefox.exe as a web browser does it still work?
CIS > Firewall > Network Security Policy > Firefox.exe > edit > use predefined policy > web browser?
Okay, I ran the script and have attached the report. I did not import the configuration from the old version. I entered the information manually following these steps:
You also asked about adding iexplorer.exe / firefox.exe as web browsers. I’m not sure how to do that. I did not have to add my web browsers for Comodo in the past.
I did go to CIS > Firewall > Network Security Policy … but where do I find Firefox.exe? I did not find any of the specific web browsers listed under any of the tabs in network security.
Thanks Again for all your help.
p.s… it is now the next morning and I still can’t get any browser to open to a webpage, but I am connected to the internet and my anti virus program is not having any problems checking for and getting the updates.
