Postpone AV update when scan starts

I had a virus/malware problem recently that prevented updates from running at the start of the scan. Consequently I could not run the AV scan to fix my problem. Is there any way to postpone the update in order to get the scanner running to fix a problem? Fortunately I had another AV product that ran immediately and I got the problem fixed.

Virus Scanner Settings has by default the option to Automatically Update before scanning.

Because I prefer to have consistent operation without uncontrolled surprises,
I have unchecked this option for Real Time and Manual and Scheduled scanning,
and only update manually.

I would expect that in your situation it should have been possible to abort the attempt to scan and then reconfigure the options to OMIT the Auto update before scanning.
