Page falts

Afternoon All,

I get a lot of page falts using Proactive Defence in safe mode.

A lot using Avira AntiVir.

Ideas?

wierd, what do you mean with “page falts”, internet pages that won’t load?
Are your Internet connection stable? This happens when you have CIS at proactive but not otherwise?

May be he means page faults as can be shown in Task Manager?

Please be more clear where you see the error.

Afternoon,

What I mean, lets say Defense+ is running in safe mode and I start a full system with Avira, and ■■■■!

The system shuts down, and I get a error message when I re-start the system saying “Page falt” from my BIOS I think. And Win XP/Home re starts.

Win XP/Home saya a error has happened, and XP then says it has recoveed from the error, and a memory dump file ends up in my Win directory.

So for now I disabled Defense+

Is that a blue screen you get? It looks like the error could be Page fault in non paged area. That usually refers to problems with memory or your had when paging (writing RAM memory to disk).

For now check the integrity of the file system. Go to Start → Run (+ enter) → type chkdsk /f (notice there is a space between chkdk and /f) and push enter → you will get a question; answer no → a second one will if you want to check on the next boot → answer yes and reboot your machine.

Switch one D+ and produce another crash. Look at the blue screen and let us know the error name (something like PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA) and error code something like (0X00000050).

Keep us posted.

Thats the one.

For now the whole program got the Del .

Because COMODO’s program is runing on my server, and now the firewall is having a hard time keeping it’s settings wirh a MS-DOS OS Workstation.

And I’m running out of time, busy here. :frowning:

Yep…

I know all about CHKDSK

And nope just ran a chkdsk, and NO cross-linked files on my srver.

Then I suggest to test your RAM. I have good experiences with Microsoft’s Windiag: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp . Let it run for at least ten rounds and see if problems occur.

Memtest 86+ FTW on memory testing IMO. You may also want to run a manufacturer diagnostic test or IBMs DFT on your hard drive to check lower level than the check disk filesystem check.

Yes, definitely Memtest 86+. Run at least 2 complete rounds with this to check for memory errors.
latest version: 3.5
Burn it to a CD and boot from the CD.

Afternoon Eric

Well got a chance to run some memory tests.

DL’ed MemTest-86 v3.5 and burned it to a CD, and booted it from the CD-Rom drive.

Ran it and “NO” errors.

I still think Avira and COMODO don’t like each other. My notebook crashed also when Defence+ was active and I started a virus scan with Avira.

Ideas?

Hi Again Eric,

I just ran MemTest-86 v3.5 twice (2 times) again …

And “NO” memory errors.

So?

Afternoon,

You got a program name I can goggle of a file name to look for?

Thanks in avance!

Gufus

A memory testing program should be left to run at least a couple of hours. I have good experiences with Microsoft’s Windiag: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp .

Let Windiag run at least 10 full cycles.

Some people suggest to let your computer run overnight; letting memory run for such a long time will heat up the memory modules and heat might be a trigger…

Afternoon Eric

Done!

I burned up a disk with Microshafts Mem checker and let it run for aout 4 hours.

And “no” errors were found again.

I tend to agree with you about heat might be a trigger… my CPU is a P4 and it’s a HEAT PIG!

So? AVIRA and D+ don’t like each other?

Gufus

Your hardware is fine so it has to be software. Uninstall Avira and install another AV and see what happens.

Afternoon,

Agreed!

Avira and COMODO don’t like each other, I tried again, as soon as I ran a scan with Avira “CRASH”

Deleted COMODO, and all is fine again.

Well Avira AV is here to stay, it’s almost at the top of AV software.

Cheers!

Did you have the AV of CIS active while running Antivir? Disabling the Residential Shield of CIS might have done the trick.

Hi,

Avira and Comodo work just fine together, (you have to disable the comodo virusscanner though, or not install it)

Comodo has a serious problem with page-faults, it’s harddisk accessing code is really terrible.
It usually does not cause BSOD’s but can do so in computers with other problems like faulty hardware or a broken windows install.

I hope Melih takes this problem seriously and has his staff re-write the HDD access parts of their software from scratch to completely eliminate this problem and speed up the application further in the process.
