A while ago, while working on my father’s computer (Windows XP Home Edition), there were problems updating and downloading some of the updates for Windows XP, as the Comodo Firewall would not allow/blocked some of the updates. A number of work arounds were suggested to allow complete updating of the operating system. I have been checking the forum to see if this topic has been broached already and have not found it. (If it has, please forgive this question.)
Has the problem(s) been corrected in the firewall so that Windows updates are no longer problematic. (I will be working on my Dad’s computer later this weekend.) I understand that there has been updates to the Comodo Firewall and will check to verify what version of the firewall is installed on my Dad’s computer.
The latest version fixed a number of issues, however I’m not aware of any known issues with windows updates.
The latest version is 2.3.5.62 and should work fine with windows updates, if not can you give as much details as possible, such as any error messages, etc.
Thank you for your response! You were not aware of any conflicts with Windows Updates?? Really??There was/were, indeed, issues with XP updates and Comodo Firewall at that time. I worked with a tech from Microsoft to allow one update to be installed on my father’s computer on the previous (month) round of XP Updates. I have not yet been to my parents to install the most recent XP updates.
Here is the summary of what was done with Microsoft’s assistance to enable download of XP update kb917422!
Action: Tried to install the update kb917422.
Result: Buffer overrun detected … program :86 cafc583a
58922d9f353b3a41cf\update\update.exe A buffer over has been detected which has corrupted the program internal state … the program cannot safely continue execution and must be terminated Cause: Possibly due to altered settings on the internet explorer.
Resolution :Reset the websettings to default. Deleted the cookies and temporary internet files. In safe mode, downloaded and installed update.
PS the workaround, as suggested by this site??
CPF 2.2.0.11 is having problems while kernel32.dll is being updated on the fly. Here are the solutions:
Before commiting KB917422 update :
1 - Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CmdAgent key and rename the ImagePath value e.g. “C:\Program Files\Comodo\Personal Firewall\cmdagent.exe” to “C:\Program Files\Comodo\Personal Firewall\cmdagent.xxx” so that when you restart the PC, cmdagent.exe wont start.
2- Restart the PC and update your computer with KB917422
3- Restore the value ImagePath in key “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CmdAgent” to its old value.
4- Restart the PC
Note that killing cmdagent.exe has no effect and wont solve this problem. The only solution for 2.2.0.11 users are these 4 steps.
BETA versions are not susceptible to this problem.
