Newbie question-Launch pad [Resolved]

What is the Launch Pad, I don’t have the icon on my system tray. What does it do and is it necessary? I have version 2.2.6.81. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I just installed today and I’m learning. Not that computer savvy.
