New Comodo Intallation with Wireless Printing [Resolved]

I just installed and activated Comodo and all of a sudden I cannot print wirelessly. ??? If I plug in the cable printer directly into my laptop it prints fine. I did all the steps to run the network wizard and the applications wizard. Is there something I’m missing? Is the firewall preventing the wireless printing? Thanks in advance for your help.

Question, do you have an HP printer?
I found the following, if I try to print wirelessly with an HP printer, and I have all of the processes it has in the startup enabled, it does a portscan sever enough to trigger Comodo into emergency mode and issue a temporary block on the printer’s IP.

I then found that if I disable the startup proccesses for the printer (using msconfig), I can still print fine and manually launch the solution center when needed, but it also doesn’t do the port scan that triggers Comodo into the block.

I have a Dell All in one (I think 952, or that series–I’m at work right now and have to double check) which is really a Canon, I believe. Does this mean I am unable to print wirelessly ever again with Comodo as my firewall? Can’t I put it through as a trusted entity? I’m learning here. Thanks! :frowning:

I’m not sure about Canons. I do not think you’ll be unable to print wirelessly, it’s just a matter of finding the cause. My solution was what I found worked for HP printers, it’s probably different for Canon. When you try to print, is anything logged in the firewall?

I need to be at home to continue trouble shooting but it seems the simple solution would be to define a new network range as a trusted zone adding only the IP address of my router as trusted (where do I find the IP address of my router?). Is there a generic range for this?

Is my IP address of my router (linksys) the one that I use in the address bar to access the router setup, etc.? While I’m at it, should I also restrict the range of the computers that I want to connect to my lan (getting this from the faq section here) by putting in the “subnet mask” of my network (LAN settings) for 1 pc at 255.255.255.252?

I think I get the gist, but not sure where to find everything and where to put it when I find it? LOLOLOL

Seriously. I do need your help…can you tell? Thanks!!!

I just realized I changed to OpenDNS a while back and am wondering if this is effecting how I try and get my wireless printing back on line or if it has no effect. What you do with OpenDNS is change your DNS settings in 2 areas: in the Windows XP Setup (Network Connections, TCP/IP) and in your Linksys setup (static DNS 1 & 2). I can set it back to 0000 which is what it was originally (at least for Linksys and I’m assuming it is the same for the Windows XP Setup). OpenDNS asks you to set as follows:

Preferred DNS server: 208.67.222.222 (TCP/IP Windows XP Setup)
Alternate DNS server: 208.67.220.220 (TCP/IP Windows XP Setup)

Static DNS 1: 208.67.222.222 (Linksys Setup)
Static DNS 2: 208.67.220.220 (Linksys Setup)

I did add 2 new zones as follows:
Name: Homewirelessnetwork
Start Range: 192.168.1.0
End Range: 255.255.255.252

Name: DellPrinterAIO962
Start Range: 192.168.1.102
End Range: 255.255.255.252

I also noticed that there is another defined zone that was already there:
Name: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection - Packet Scheduler Miniport
Start Rrange: 192.168.1.0
End Range: 192.162.1.255

All of them are set as trusted and I see the rules at the top of Network Monitor, etc.

However, I still cannot print.
I tested to see if it is in fact CPF that is blocking my wireless printing by temporarily setting the security level to Allow All and I was able to print. Of course, I set the security level back to Custom.

So, I need to tweak something but am at a loss as to what. Any ideas?

Here is a log from a failed wireless print attempt:

Since I could print wirelessly perfectly before I uninstalled Norton and now since I installed CFP and I cannot print wirelessly, does allowing PSSU.EXE (IP Setup Utility) and WPSSW.EXE (Wireless Print Adapter Setup Wizard) in the application monitor help?

Can you print if you temporarly disable the firewall? If that still doesn’t work, you might try the norton removal utility since norton is known for leaving things behind which might cause a problem.

I’ll check. How do you temporarily disable CPF (right click on icon and exit)? I went through what ended up being about 3.5 hours of uninstalling Norton with a live support person from Norton for the last hour. UGH! Is setting CF to the “allow all” level just as effective or must I turn it off? (Sorry, so many questions).

By the way, does my defined zones for my Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG (is this the wireless printer adapter?), my printer, and my homewirelessnetwork look right? Is OpenDNS effecting this? See previous post. Is there any other equipment I need to set up a zone, etc. for. Perhaps I am confusing the Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG with my Dell Wireless Printer Adapter 3300 and have not included all my devices when I’m defining network zones, etc.?

I’m at work now. When I go home I will turn off the CPF and see if I can still print wirelessly. If i can, then I can safely assume it is a CPF configuration issue, right? I’ve been trying to fix stuff with my limited knowledge and what I could pick up here and I’m hoping I did not ■■■■■ it up more. It’s hard when you don’t fully understand what your doing.

One of the things I’ve been doing is plugging and unplugging my USB cable from the wireless printer adapter into my dell inspirion 6000 laptop so I can temporarily print when I need to. Could this be interrupting the process? Do I need to reinstall the printer? I am so confused…I need help badly.

Yes, allow all is effectively disabling. If it prints, then it’s a configuration issue and it’ll just be figuring out what that is.
OpenDNS shouldn’t make a difference if the printer is on the same network as you.

Detail the problem, such as which applications are running when you have the problem.

I am unable to print wirelessly with CFP running with the security level at custom. I tested to see if I could print wireless with CFP running on allow all and I AM ABLE TO PRINT WIRELESS this way. Therefore, I must have configured my network and all necessary components incorrectly. See above (11/17 posting) for zone configurations which are all set as trusted.

This looks to be a part of the Dell printer utility, and there is an Application Monitor rule blocking it. In the screenshot of the Application Monitor rules, there are 4 entries for dlbxcoms.exe. The last one has a block rather than an allow. What happens if you change it be be an allow?

Tnx for the PM, elnlou. Grue’s right on it, I think. Your “offender” appears to be dlbxcoms.exe, which is a Dell printer communication utility/interface.

I’m going to guess that you probably had some sort of “hijack” alert for this .exe, and have blocked it (thus the blocked entry in AppMon. My suggestion is as follows:

Remove all AppMon entries for dlbxcoms.exe (whether block or allow). Reboot.
Before firing up your printer, go to Security/Tasks/Define a New Trusted Application, and select dlbxcoms.exe. Finish that process, and then Exit the firewall (right-click systray icon, select Exit). Wait a little bit (10 seconds or so), then restart it from your desktop icon (Note: This only effects the GUI, not the core of the firewall).

Then you should be able to print. If you get any “hijack” type alerts for the printer app, please Allow w/Remember as long as you recognize both apps in the alert (if you don’t recognize both, Deny w/out Remember and start checking to find out what the other one is - chances are it will be legit).

Okay, so the reason I gave these steps (to remove all rules, create it as trusted application) is due to the headache that wireless printers can be, especially where they have a control application like this. You need to be able to print w/o conflict, and those things can be a pain, sometimes. By setting it as a Trusted App, you’re telling it to communicate freely; in conjunction with the Trusted Zone/Network, you should be good to go.

That’s just my 2 cents; Grue can give you some great advice and suggestions on dealing with this issue. He’s done so before with others, so you’re in good hands!

Little Mac,

GREAT NEWS! IT WORKED! I can print wirelessly now. Thank you so much. I was hoping for a simple solution. :BNC

Glad that’s working for you! I’ll mark the thread as Resolved and close it. If the problem returns, just PM a Moderator (please include a link back here) and we’ll reopen it for you.
