If I leave “automatically detect new networks” checked, when I rename my connection the next restart will re-detect the connection under its system default name.

More like a dynamic ip address. You ip address will reset after weeks but not suppose to happen everyday. Do you update it yourself…or your isp does it?
I’m connected through a router, and the private IP address doesn’t change from one boot to the next (I’m using port forwarding for Skype, so I set a reserved IP).
