Network connected; internet browsing not connected.

OK EricJH, here is the new thread.

I have reinstalled CIS. It was not a clean install (or was>>then was not).

Basic problem >>>

Connect to internet vial dialup (networking sys with an ISP in Seattle) just fine. Being dialup its very slow on downloads and waiting for data to be saved on the cache. otherwise pretty good.

Connect to wireless network just fine. Cannot connect to internet browsing capabilities, though both IE7 and Fx3.5.2 initial pages open.

Below is a copy of my current ipconfig /all results:

Diligent. ???

changed dialup phone access numbers. virus defs still downloading>>suspect latent virus. closing

Edit by EricJH: undid the title of all caps

ran Malwarebytes including signature updates>> every thing smooth>>no detection. Also ran Superantispyware>>same actions, same results. Ran Comodo uninstall fix tool.

Reinstalled Comodo. at 9:47 pm (pacific standard time). Comodo again stuck on 30% of downloads for new definitions.

Am going to bed, letting the virus downloads run. Don’t think anything is downloading though.

Good Night, Diligent.

Good morning.

dialup downloads of cav finished. But CAV still says I need to update. Thats what I thought might be happening! Well, does not seem to be malware. Its just that I am not fully protected.

On to the matter at hand. The network connection its still fine. Here is the latest lease info:

Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Monday, August 31, 2009 6:49:16 AM

Still can connect to internet via dialup. USB lan still won’t connect to internet web pages. No firewall events.

Should I screenshot my “View network connections”, “My port sets” and/or “My network zones”.

Thanks, Diligent.

Just a recap. Your internet is fully functional on dial up and will also allow you to update CIS and other programs? However when using a wireless connection you can’t browse nor you can’t update CIS or other programs. Is that correct?

Your ipconfig report looks fine to me. The wireless seems connected properly. Do you have some additional information about your wireless connection?

Can you show a screenshot of your Global Rules and when present of your firewall logs? Also let Diagnostics run and see if that helps and what it says.

DIALUP:

Seems to funtion normal. Yesterday updated malware definitions in Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, and Housecall Online scan.

The sole quirk, is updating CAV definitions.

What first happened is that I started the virus def’s update, walked to a store and back (10 mins). On the screen was two CIS (D+ I think?) requests to allow or block the internet connection request by my dialup ISP. I clicked allow twice. The download became stuck on the 30% level. Kept going and going and going. The was increasing traffic that I could see in my “view active connections”. It was up to about 20 mb, when I started getting worried about malware and stopped it. After malware scans, just before going to bed I started the virus definitions update again. Still stuck on 30%. By this morning the downloads had cleared like downloads had finished. Now says never uptdated. Virus signature database version is 2161.

WIRELESS:

The network is clearly functioning. Over 75% signal strength. From 90% to 100% Link Quality. The sole internet connections I can make, is an initial IE7 & Fx 3.5.2 page. Nothing else functioning.

As described in the ipconfig, this “realtek” wireless USB came in an “Encore Electronics” box. A CD is supplied to setup the Lan system. I used it to get the ipconfig report you see. The open signal cones from a close-by computer reair guy. He was willing to allow his sent out radio signals to be used but presenting him with probs aver the signals was out. The network was connecting fine until about a month ago after I uninstalled IE8 (rollback). the network was connected but no internet. I used the comodo dns numbers, and viola, the internet connected with a lease of two weeks duration. At about the the lease was up, out went the internet connection. Same now. Good network, no internet web browsing.

GLOBAL RULES:

They changed since early yesterday. Had a green line on top. below is that screenshot.

FIREWALL EVENTS:

There have never been any firewall events listed. Below is that screenshot.

DIAGNOSTICS:

Ran before, and just did again. Reports found no problems.

Thanks for the help Eric. Appreciated. Diligent.

After a clean isntall of 3.11 there is a huge AV update waiting of 100 MB. On dial up this will take a lóóóóng time.

To see if the download is still running look under Firewall → Common Tasks → View Active Connections. During this process the progress indicator will stay a long time at 30% and it will slowly start to go up after this.

Coming to think of things regarding the wireless. Go to Control Panel → Internet Options → Connections → to succesfully use broadband you need to to either “Never dial a connection” or “Dial whenever a network connection is not present”. See the image.

Also look under LAN settings and see if changing "Automatically detect settings’ plays a role here.

Have it set just like your image. See connection image below

edit: I goofed and gave ya two internet connection images…was tring to give two view active connections images.

The “Automatically detect settings” from the research I have done, goes along with the windows program only. Not to say that its gospel, but that what I gathered from different sources.

I am using the Encore drivers and utility cd, which when it operates >>like it is now<<, provides the ipconfig
results in the above post.

I have the option, via that CD prog, to enable “Windows zero config” [WZC]. I tried it but could not get results in that don’t quite know how to make it fully function yet.

Since the cd lan prog got such good ipconfig results, and its worked for a long time, I stayed with it.

Open to suggestion and thoughts though.

The view active connections window had noting in it this morning. Does this screenshot show what you were saying? You mean I have AV updates waiting? I can’t see them ! looks like normal connections than come and go. Where (and how) do you see a huge av update waiting?

Thanks, Diligent.

You set the Comodo DNS servers and that got it working for a week. Try setting a fixed local IP address for your wireless. Try several IP addresses in the range of 192.168.24.2 -192.168.24.254 and fill in the Comodo DNS server addresses. The reason I ask to try multiple IP addresses is that we don’t know how many other people are on this connection. It may be best to work top down; usually dhcp servers start with the low numbers.

Another step is to stealth CIS using the Stealth Ports Wizard (Firewall → Common Tasks). In the Stealth Ports Wizard choose the third option “Block all incoming connections stealth my ports toeveryone”–> Finish. This should produce firewall alerts; that may give us a clue. When you get alerts please post a screenshot.

Went back to malware, cause things still did not match up. Ran a HijackThis. I bolded some items that looked odd to me >> explorer.EXE ain’t right. See redirects also. HijackThis log follows:

EDIT>> Decided to my full cleanup and try another Hijackthis run. Am posting again in another reply post.

OK, did my full disk and registry cleanupWith registry optimization. Cecked again, and Microsoft says this is how Explorer.EXE should look “EXPLORER.EXE”. Ain’t right, but don’t know if it matters?

Do ya think all these “redirects” in IE are causing the network-internet prob in IE7 and Fx?

The logs did bring new information. The request from 0.0.0.0. port 67 UDP to 255.255.255.255 port 68 UDP is a broadcast from your computer to the router using the Bootstrap protocol to get an IP address. I am going to see if making these two addresses trusted will help to get a connection

Please make a new network zone under My Network Zones (firewall → Common Tasks) for the addresses 0.0.0.0 and 255.255.255.255. Give it a name, lets say Limited Broadcast.

Then go to the Stealth Ports Wizard (Firewall → Common Tasks) and choose “Define a new trusted network stealth my ports to EVERYONE else” → Next → choose “I would like to trust an existing My Network Zone” → from the drop down menu Zone name below choose “Limited Broadcast” → Finish.

Now check again with your wireless.

Good. We might be getting somewhere. I went ahead an looked carefully for any 67/68 entries just in case.

I posted them below so you would have more complete information before we proceeded.

BTW, after the disk/registry clean>>when I went to bed last night was going to try virus updates again. and, VOILA, all the updates were now listed as having been completed. Something had stopped the correct virus updates info from appearing. So I ran a virus scan instead. :-TU

Edit: OK, completed your instructions>>I think. See new screenshoot limitedbroadcastone. Not sure thats right or not.

You can now proceed as I wrote in my previous reply.

A little background on the Bootstrap protocol. In case where the client does not know its IP address it will broadcast, basically calling around, from 0.0.0.0 port 67 UDP to the server which listens on 255.255.255.255 port 68 UDP. The server will then broadcast from its IP address (192.168.24.1 in your case) on port 68 UPD to the “world” using address 255.255.255.255 port 67 UDP.

Let me know if this solved it for you.

OK, was proceeding. See my question in my last post on whether I set up the new network zone correctly or not. Looks like two separate addresses but the other ones above it are side by side XXXX/XXXX.

Guess My Network Zone is setup right, cause don’t see any more 67 or 68 entries. So basically we blocked such 67 and 68 entries then unblocked them. But now do know they are there.

Internet browsers won’t open just as before. ipconfig /all still looks good:

Hear from when I do. Thanks again. Diligent.

The network zone is correct so you can proceed as suggested.

There are three ways of defining a network:

  • separate addresses like in this case
  • an address range which will look a.b.c.d to w.x.y.z
  • an IP address with a subnet mask (like you see in your My Network Zones)

We ar back to square one insofar as the internet connection is concerned. I have also been able to have windows set the connection up.

Worked on the Lan “automatically detect settings” you addressed in one above post. It is used in wireless wifi situations. One example: http://74.125.113.132/search?q=cache:OxjCLZNB_UsJ:www.avalonlibrary.org/ein/avalon/wireless.html+what+is+lan+“automatically+detect+settings”&cd=44&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

In one thread, the situation we have was summed up fairly well, with some instruction >>>

tjmartineau, on Saturday September 20, 2008 06:55:40 PM

Gab,
If the adapter works on a different device, then we know the router, modem, and adapter are working correctly. That leaves both your PC and other laptop.
Let’s start with your PC,
click on start,
then control panel,
then network connections,
then right click on Local area connection (Or wireless depending), and select properties.
On the first window, select TCP/IP, then click the properties button,
Obtain an IP address automatically and DNS automatically should be selected. (if not, do so for now)

If that’s ok, close the windows, click on start, then run, then type cmd and hit enter

Type ipconfig/all and copy and paste what you get on here.

A problem where the devices can see the network, but not the internet, usually has to do with the DNS Servers, so after you do your ipconfig/all, type the following,

ipconfig/release (then hit enter)
ipconfig/flushdns (then hit enter)
ipconfig/renew (then hit enter, and wait, it may take a minute)
ping news.google.com (then hit enter, if this replies, then you have internet access, if not, last step)
ping 74.125.19.104 (then hit enter, if this replies, you have internet, but not DNS, so you cannot type names to get to websites, and the fix is a tad more complex.

Let me know the results…

So according to this TJ, we obviously have a good network connection, but no sort of internet connection, whether or not we have a DNS server problem.

At least that what I am thinking this all means. But we saw the 67 and 68 attempts, so there the problem seems to rest I guess. Well, something to chew on. Talk to ya later. Thanks, Diligent.

Did you try to make the Limited Broadcast part of your trusted network by using the Stealth Ports Wizard as I described earlier:

Please try this first to see if that makes the situation work. Without this I cannot continue.

Yes, that went smooth so was not concerned with an error like I was with setting up the new My network zone addresses. I Performed both of the things you asked to do, prior to 12:00 P.M. (10 am here).

Thanks for asking, Diligent.
