Most Effective Way to Reinstall/Update CIS to Avoid/Fix Problems

IDk if Chirons guide causes damages, maybe I’ll try uninstall and reinstall without Chirons uninstall/removal tools next time.

I thought so too that’s why I always restored backup images that didn’t have Comodo installed/uninstalled, also mention it my Deepfreeze bug report. But that gets tiresome having to reinstall all the other stuff after restoring a backup image.

Manually cleaning out Comodo registries/drivers like in my previous post fixes all this for me. I think Chirons uninstall/removal tools attempts to the same thing automated but it can’t completely wipe it clean due to errors.

Uninstall Comodo normally in Windows but uninstall tools and manual cleaning should all be done in Safe Mode.

This does not work on Windows 8. :frowning:

CIS does no longer use Legacy Keys in Windows 8. On my system only Super Antispyware is using them.

Ok, good to know. One less thing to troubleshoot.

I also wanted to mention that the “COMODO Removal Tool 2014 - Mods version” tool has various errors in it. Specifically there are errors in the lines used to create the REGISTRY.REG file and also the DEL command at the end of that section. I’m surprised no one else has mentioned them.

I got the issues when updating Comodo at the end of 2014, and it broke my whole PC :frowning: I uninstalled Comodo, used CCleaner, Revo, and now my machine all boots OK, but I get a Comodo fatal error message at start up. This doesn’t seem to affect anything though - I just close the message. When I tried to use the other tool on the very first page of this thread, however, although the Comodo message didn’t then appear, I found I had no internet access … no idea why. A quick system restore took me back, and while I still get the Comodo message, I’m having to live with it.

I can’t believe that Comodo don’t provide an effective removal for their own software. And that a corruption like this breaks the whole machine … I won’t be using any of their products again anytime soon I’m afraid :frowning: Once bitten and all that …

David

Please try the removal tool in Safe Mode and see if that brings a solution or not. If it does not bring a solution could you post a screenshot of the error message your getting?

It is mentioned in my reinstall guide on the previous page. Those are part of what causes these error messages and corruption on reinstalls like for DavidJHowe…

The mods removal tools alone can’t fix these error messages since Comodo v7 in Safe Mode or not. Use my reinstall guide on previous page 8.

So, to sum things up: the uninstall process of CIS8 doesn't work... It will only install correctly on a system that never had CIS installed on it. The only way to reinstall CIS on a system that already had another version of CIS uninstalled is to reinstall/factory restore windows.

Is this really true?

I have Firewall v6 and want to update to latest version, but wanted to make sure that OP instructions in Post #1 is way to go. I am running Windows 7 Professional and Avira.

Also - Looks like v8 is farely new. Is v7 stable and is there a link for download the latest 7?

May be in a single case. I don’t know what topic this comment comes from. So I cannot comment.

Chiron's guide is highly reliable and supported by all moderators.

You already found the link in another topic. Please don't cross post.

Any suggested registry cleaners?

I just checked and the tool/batch file is still not fixed. ???

How did it mess up Defender?

CIS will disable Defender as the AV of CIS takes over the job of Defender. Other security suites do the same thing. If you insist running Defender alongside CIS then you will have to start the Windows Defender Service. I have never tried if they CIS and Defender get along. Defender takes a lot of resources when f.e. scanning a big folder and may have a serious impact on your system performance.

Hello,

Is there an updated removal tool for CIS v. 8.0.x.xxxx ?

Thanks,

HJLBX

Hello everyone, i thank you for the help i’ve found here and i’m grateful for the opportunity to kindly ask for more.

To the point, i need some clarification at STEP 2, what’s the order one uses those tools? xp sp3 here

Second, i’d like to try deleting them registry keys manually, if these tools fail. So which are they, how should i look for them…
any advice on this is mych appreciated

No. It supports version <8.2.0.4508>. 2013 version is the same as 2014 version from my observations.

I’ve attached the official version (given by GeekBuddy) which includes some additional features:

  • remove temp files
  • run disk cleanup

Hope it helps.

Thank you, qmarius.

These features were deliberately removed so please use with care.

Q, many thanks for posting this, but I think once downloaded by hjlbx, it would be better to remove the link if you don’t mind. The full version of the GB tool removes, without adequate warning, stuff unrelated to CIS that some people may want preserved.

These is another post in the stickies relating to more complete manual removal.

That’s not valid. The posted version prompts the user for every action category. :slight_smile:

[code=“prompt”]
echo 3. REMOVE TEMP FILES
echo ======================================================
echo 4. RUN DISK CLEAN UP
echo ======================================================

[code="forward"]
if %choice% equ 3 goto TEMP
if %choice% equ 4 goto DISK CLEAN UP

Hope it helps.

Hello qmarius and mouse1,

I don’t need the GB Removal Tool… I just was curious if a new removal tool had come along since initial 8.0 build.

I always clean install the Windows OS and then CIS.

I do it this way to eliminate any doubt regarding a prior install interfering with the existing. It makes my life easier.

Best Regards,
