(V) I have two questions:

  1. Microsoft is offering as a priority Windows Update, a malware romaval tool. I would like to know if this is going to make my protection system more effective when I already have Boclean and CPF up and running.
  2. What are the major differences between AVG(Grisoft) and Avast? Which is more effective?

Well, now that’s really a difficult question…

Answer to Q no1: As you may already know, MS offers the best (i.e. sh…) protection in the world.
This is why Melih and friends are more than necessary and welcome.

CPF is a monster of a firewall. Version 3 will be the Über-Monster, I guess (sorry, american style german nerd xpression, forgive me, but this Nietzschean term “Über”, american “Uber” has already conquered the world, even if I don’t really like all those those Nietzscheanisms…)

BoClean is better than ever these days.

Answer to Q no2: The main difference between AVG and avast (talking about the FREE versions) is that the FREE version of emsisoft a squared is superior.

All of this applies ONLY to MALWARE, not the usual Virus thingie. Of course.

If you also meant Viruses and alike, Avira free might, at least at the moment I wrote these lines, be the best choice.

If you want to block viruses:

  1. Use a safe Browser (FF, Opera)
  2. Use Avira Free

If you want to block Spyware:

Add SpywareTerminator.

If you want to block Malware as such:

Add BOClean and SpywareBlaster and Spybot SD (use the immunizer!)

If you want to delete Adware that’s been lurking on your PC for more than 10 years, use Adaware.

(Joke)

If you want to remove Trojans already on your sys, use emsisoft a squared or special tools.
Not AVG or SAS in the first place, use them as a second choice if a squared cannot heal your sys.

Maybe if all that works, use a HIPS?

If not sure what HIPS means browse this forum for that term.

1.- I think that MS’s antimalware tool offers no resident protection, it just updates then runs every month. Won’t harm you having your computer scanned in that way, but it’s no substitute for BOClean’s resident protection (well no program whatsoever is a substitute for BOC since it’s so special).

2.- Avast and AVG Free are reportedly good antiviruses. Some used to say that Avast is slightly better, some now say that Avast is losing ground… You can use any one of them. Or if you care about our recommendations, use Avira AntiVir instead, it’s just plain better than both Avast and AVG, specially the free versions.

The removal tool removes a select amount of common viruses. Mostly these would exist on computers that have no av, possibly no firewall and a user that possibly does not care. Any common/decent av will get rid of all the viruses that the removal tool covers.

By reading all of your replies, it´s possible to realize that MS Malware removal tool is optional and not a security priority. As I care about adding 9,1MB (useless) to my HD, which will have to be updated every month, I´d better not download it for the time being.
I´m sorry but I´m not an expert, and as so, I have never heard about Avira free. Where can I get independent information on it?
Finally, of course I very much appreciate your advices. If it was not so, I would not write here every now and then with my questions.
