Language files - clean unnecessary

Dear Comodo,

you may like to add a facility to " Clear language files, except the one selected ", as they are very large, and usually never used, JV16 has this facility, whilst I delete yours manually, as part of my junk file clearout.

Many programs only install the selected langauage, and you may consider this the better option, because it saves you heaps of data downloading, and streamlines your files.

Many thanks for making your CIS availiable to us retired people free, it is really appreciated.

I have used Comodo CIS for years, and it has made my computer totally secure, because it is a coordinated system, that works in real time by prevention. To highlight this, while everbody else has had to reinstall after a ransomeware attack, I have been able to easily restore mine.

Best Regards Bill3.

Changed all caps title to regular case. Eric

+1,

Although my preferred option would be install only the selected language through the installer.

The CIS item listed within Programs & Features (Add Remove Programs) should then be updated to support a Change/Modify feature so that user’s can then modify their local install and select other language’s to use.
This will support the use-case for change of language post installation.

Now because CIS release cycle’s initially always include English translations thus always being the 1st one available and then the other translations follow in an updated point release allowing to modify the installation via Programs & Features (Add Remove Programs) also allows user’s to change their language via updated releases when they are available.
This will support the use-case for change of language (native or otherwise) when they are available in updated releases.

Cheers

 Hi Mohan,

sorry I didn’t really understand your reply, but it seemed you were very defensive, sorry if I offended you.

The object of downloading and installing only the launguage you need, saves heaps of data cost for Comodo, and clutter in C\Programs for the user. Also, if you do delete unneccassary language files, the updater just replaces them, which is totally wastful.

Mozilla have addressed this facet, as shown in the links below, so there must obviously be advantages.

Firefox download web page for single language installer or .exe file > http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
Tbird download web page for single language installer or .exe file > Download Thunderbird in your language — Thunderbird

Comodo techs are the best people to determine the most suiteable system for CIS, I don’t really mind, I’m just trying to be helpful.

Bill mate,

There wasn’t any offense taken.

Appreciated your idea hence the +1 from my side.
The other details are for how the implementation could be done.

Thank you for adding the additional use case where language files are downloaded over the net. I never setup my system to auto update instead preferring a clean install always so my responses were from the perspective of the installer.

Absolutely agree I do not want the additional. files to take up unnecessary HDD space and creating files handles in the MFT.

Mohan

 Thanks Mohan,

please pass all this on to Comodo software techs , and are you one ???

Whats the +1 mean ???

After I delete the unnecassary language files, when I update, I download megabytes of unneccassary language files, which I then delete … a terrible waste !!! … Ditto for a fresh install !!!

I suggest Comodo follow a lot of other software techs, by keeping the primary base installer as English, then facilitating exta languages, because many people will appreciate having alternatives to use, and it makes it so easy to engineer.

Right thats my two pence worth of contribution, and if you can find out how much $ it would save, I would be very interested.

Hi Bill,

please pass all this on to Comodo software techs , and are you one Huh

Sorry but am not one of the Comodo Software Tech’s. I guess the “Comodo family member” status beneath my forum profile has mislead you. That gets tacked on to any forum member who has posted above a given threshold. Instead look for members who have a “Comodo Staff” beneath their profile.

Nevertheless the forum moderator’s and perhaps Comodo Staff themselves would have already looked at this post. (Eric one of the mod’s has in fact modified your 1st post) Its interesting though 4 posts into this thread but no other member has commented  and our forum friends usually are active across topics.

Whats the +1 mean Huh
Represents an affirmation of the preceding / primary online post.

Of course that’s what we’ve mentioning throughout this thread.

Right that’s my two pence worth of contribution, and if you can find out how much $ it would save, I would be very interested.

$ cost is relative depends on what you are paying for your internet bandwidth data limits and how much did you pay for your Hard Disk so that you can see what each KB/MB of space costs you

But for my setup.

In CIS(v5) which I prefer for now
Disk cost (All languages) : 8600 KB ~ 8.6 MB
Disk cost (English templates, these come in use sometimes for debugging responses - to copy & paste strings to the forum) : 328 KB
Disk cost saved = 8272 KB ~ 8.3 MB

More than the disk space saved we should look at the file handles saved which are 153(total) - 6(English templates) = 147 file handles less in the MS Windows Master File Table (MFT).

Cheers
Mohan

 Many Thanks Mohan for your informative reply,

  1. As you mention, this really is the big aspect for cluttering up your OS :- More than the disk space saved we should look at the file handles saved which are 153(total) - 6(English templates) = 147 file handles less in the MS Windows Master File Table (MFT).

:frowning: If you then add in IOBit Smart Defrag, and Advance System Care, plus a few others, after deleting the unnecessary language files, you end up erasing 30 or 50 Mb ( I can’t remember exactly ), and removing with JV16 Registry Cleaner, 650 file handles in the Master File Table (MFT).

;D I have a policy of cleaning my OS once a month, and it keeps it fast and smooth, plus I use Swap Backup every few months for a quick clean reinstall.

 Well, I think we have covered that subject, so I’ll leave you with my thanks, and a Tech Joke :-

 COMODO CIS IS A VIRUS OR THE ART OF SMARTARSEING

Last Christmas, I spent 8 hours on my neighbour Pete’s computer, replacing the ram, and completely setting it up, with a set of programs including CIS, and left him to learn the programs. Although it ran beautifully, a month later, Pete decided to enlist the help of his friend, who is the self professed world’s expert on computers. They tried to install Videochat, but Comodo raised an alert, saying that it was a unrecognised file, trying to alter the OS. Immediately, said friend proclaimed that I was a just a bumbling fool, who had installed a major virus, and proceeded to completely reinstall Windows 7, without saving the licence key, and charging Pete for a new one. A few days later, Pete turned up at my house, looking very forlorn, after his friend had deserted him, to ask me to put all his programs back, as he could not do anything !!!
