In the USA, is it illegal to “leech” music from player sites like Playlist.com, lala.com, Gooveshark.com, etc? Orbit Downloader makes it so easy. 88)
Or is it just illegal to host music for free?
And what “could happen” if you are “caught”?

Never heard of those sites… But if its illigal to download free copies using a torrent then it most likley is doing so using a site… (I think the laws tries to stay tech neutral…)
You will need the copyright owners approval to do so with most music… But there is some music free to distribute…
In the United States if you copy or distribute copyrighted music you can be prosecuted in criminal court or sued for damages in civil court. Criminal penalties for first-time offenders can be as high as five years in prison and $250,000 in fines, even if you didn’t copy and distribute for financial or commercial gain.
Copied from a homepage… But you should really contact a lawyer for more accurate info.
:o
Reminds me this: stole jar of jam – be so kind to serve a sentence.
Never really got a good answer ;D so bump.
Another question: An artist has a pre-release song on his site as a “teaser” 88). When you press the play button, you are able to see the link to the .mp3 in Adblock Plus. Is it illegal in the USA to download that .mp3 and use it?
An artist has a pre-release song on his site as a "teaser" When you press the play button, you are able to see the link to the .mp3 in Adblock Plus. Is it illegal in the USA to download that .mp3 and use it?I think it's safe to say anything that the artist makes available to download on THEIR website is O.K. to download
The thing it it wasn’t really “available” to download. There was no “Download” link or openly available direct link to the .mp3. They had a player, and I had to use other tools to find the link…
My Personal Feeling On The wholeSubject…
Its ok to download music… as long as you dont 'sell or use it as a product"
I mean Honestly I download music but not from limewire or frostwire nor even torrents…
I do however download from like you said playlist/ you tube etc etc…
I dont think it’s ‘right’ to download it but its ok not illegal i think…
I mean; If it was illegal then i’m sure that they would introduce another file format or even better security… but idk it’s just weird how it is…
Yes, that is how I often feel about it. I usually can’t get music from torrents/p2p anyway, because the P2Pers don’t listen to the music I like.
I was easy to get music from Playlist.com…it just showed in the Blockable Items in Adblock Plus. Recently I think they changed a bit…so it didn’t show there. But now I can get good music mp3s from Lala, Rhapsody, Grooveshark, Playlist, etc. with the sneaky Orbit Downloader. 88)
Lets have a good think about some of these site… Ok lets take youtube as an example,
It’s not illegal to download music videos on youtube because:
Firstly any content that “Copyright Holders” don’t want on Youtube is caught during the upload stage.
Secondly if they don’t want you to download these videos/music they can copy protect it so you can’t download using these programs, Channel 4 Broadcasting do that on youtube with their TV on demand catch up service (Youtube UK only), I know I’ve tried >:-D
So if its on there they don’t mind you having it up for grabs. These people know the programs exist after all
Thats what I think anyway
Could you give a link to one of those videos? I want to see if what I have will work.
Yeeaaahhh…dont do it cause (what im about to say is off topic) i just got slammed by Activision for downloading their games (i broke the copyright rules) and i dont know what there gonna do about it
im fearful i may get fined for $250,000 thats for just videos i dont know about the games how much they fine so im scared :-[
sooo…i wouldnt risk it
if your going to get it from a friend…not a Stranger
They emailed you or what? Came to your door?
It is very easy for the copyright owner to ask the ISP what are the physical references of the “downloading ip”, and one must not forget that about every isp and p2p site knows the size, name, volume and nature of what you download, their last software being even able to tell if you renamed the download and how you called it.
In France, they are supposed to write you twice and, if not successfull, they are entitled to ask the judge to restrain or forbid your internet access for 2 years, in the same time of course they shall ask to this same judge financial indemnities.
There is, in these conditions no “mail or knocking at your door”, but a “ordinary” subpoena leading you to a trial.
As far as it has been documented at the day speaking, these (heavy) sanctions, including confiscation of your computer, have only been applied to “heavy” downloaders, always themselves either uploading, either reselling what they downloaded.
But the lobby of music more then movies business is making high pressure on the Representatives in order to enforce this legislation to ordinary people, downloading only few materials from some time to another: you and me.
they sent an email (we got it from charter) they said to take immediate action and Activision and Charter are still unsure of what to do
But i notice one thing under “what may have caused this”
“A minor…not knowing the copyright laws may have done this”
soo…im a minor
I can get it.
Lol…use TrustConnect or Tor or something.
I was easy to get music from Playlist.com...it just showed in the Blockable Items in Adblock Plus. Recently I think they changed a bit...so it didn't show there.I don't know if this would apply to your case, But if your lucky you can try this
Like in firefox
P.S. I know this because there are places were you have to pay to get a link to download (lets say a ebook).

:o
It’s called Orbit Downloader. 88) All kinds of nifty tools it has. ;D
Too bad I don’t have another good ISP to switch too just in case something happened. >.>
