*** ICMP AND CFOSSPEED *** [Resolved]

just to let you all participate from my knowledge… it’s not that important, but nice to know.

by default cfosspeed pings to www.cfos.de, however with a TTL of about 2. that means the ping is returned at hop 2. you can also set it to another destination. the ping destination determines what cFosSpeed consideres as route to the internet.

to change the destination in cfosspeed.ini, in section [param] you can set the key
ping_dest=…

however pings never reach the destination. they live only for 1 or 2 hops, ie. they are already returned by your broadband pop of your provider.

parts of are taken from my conversation with martin, developer of cfos/cfosspeed.

thanks!!!

so if cfosspeed tell me that it can’t ping correctly…

i must put this string: ping_dest=www.cfos.de in cfosspeed.ini ?

Thanks Triplejolt, that was a good explanation. That means that without the ability for cfosspeed to receive any pings it wont really do any traffic shaping, right?

@bubus: no, normally there IS that string already. you can change the string into something more useful if you’re in the states, perhaps www.digital.com or some host, that is near to you.
if cfosspeed really can’t ping (so, if the firewall blocks pings), than this string wouldn’t change a thing.

@wingnut: please read my last post carefully… cfosspeed does NOT receive pings, it GENERATES pings to a host. what it receives are the replies from the isp (from the first hops only, never ever from the target itself because the time to live (ttl) for the ping is set to 2 or 3).

it uses this replies to manage the rules for shaping.

what u need to get things going is: (ping cfosspeed → host)

rule 1: ICPM OUT (echo request) Source IP (your_networkname) Destination IP (www.cfos.de)
rule 2: ICPM IN (echo reply) Source IP (www.cfos.de) Destination IP (your_networkname)

and to complete the show and to be absolutly sure all ping-directions are satified…
(ping host → cfosspeed - this will NEVER happen!!!)

rule 1: ICPM IN (echo request) Source IP (www.cfos.de) Destination IP (your_networkname)
rule 2: ICPM OUT (echo reply) Source IP (your_networkname) Destination IP (www.cfos.de)

to see your networkname simply open a dos-window and type: ping -a 127.0.0.1
the name before the [127.0.0.1] is your networkname

pheww…hope that helps…!!!
