How to allow only specific websites?

Hi all, I’m brand new to Comodo, so apologize in advance if this question has been asked before. I’ve tried going through FAQ but most of it seems like foreign language to me.

I have the latest v3 Comodo installed on Vista in a normal LAN testing this on the Admin account with the Avira Antivirus turned off or disabled.

I haven’t created any custom rules but what I am trying to do is allow access only to certain websites using all the popular browsers on this pc such as IE7, Firefox and Safari. For example, what do I need to do to make sure these browsers can only access www.cnn.com or www.msn.com while all other attempts for other sites will fail?

Thanks so much for your attention and I look forward to some feedback on how to begin or even just let me know which FAQ is the right path for me to follow. Much appreciated.

There is a thread about this. I remember seeing it. Do a search. Most browsers can do this for you.

Greetings!

For this, you’ll need the following global rules/application rules:

Allow TCP OR UDP Out From Any To [IP-adress of the website] Where Source Port Is Any And Destination Port is Any

From Any can be exchanged for your MAC-adress or static IP.

IP-adress can be obtained by using the built-in ping utility. Open start menu, click ‘Run’, write ‘ping [website URL]’ and you’ll get the IP-adress. [website URL] is the URL you want to allow.

You’ll need to create one rule for each website.

Under it, create a blocking rule:

Block (And Log) IP Out From IP Any To IP Any Where Protocol Is Any

From IP Any can be exchanged for your MAC-adress or static IP.

Global rules are better if you’re going to set up multiple browsers, as you won’t have to create the rules for each application.

NOTE: Remember to put the rules that allows access over the blocking rule!

It would be easier to create zone and then add all allowable addresses to that zone. Once the zone is completed, create a global network rule that BLOCKs access to ports 80 and 443 with an EXCLUDE on the previously created zone of allowable sites.

Ewen

by that, do you mean to “put the rules that allow access above the blocking rule!”

hey thanks so much for the feedback!

Yes, that’s what I meant

hmm. the concept sounds simple, following precisely the instruction above, but i simply couldn’t get IE to successfully access the websites that I “grant” access.

Internet Explorer does this for you. Right click on IE and select properties. Then click the security tab. Its all right there. Also don’t use IE unless needed. Use Firefox.
