Has anyone tried SandBoxIE?

Has anyone tried SandBoxIE? It will run on 32 bit machines but not 64. I have 64 bit, and wanted to use SandBoxIE which lead me to trying a 32 bit VM. A VM by itself would do the same as SandBoxIE. But now I’m advised to use a firewall and AV, etc while using a VM…

So my question really is, how does this work with the host computer already running the best firewall in the world, why would I also need one on a VM??? And just how secure would using a VM be???

Depends what you want to do with your VM and how you setup Comodo to deal with the VM network on the physical machine. You can do without AV and firewall, but only if you destroy all changes made to the VM each time. I would recommend you protect your VM. This way when you want to keep changes such as windows updates, you can safely do so.

AV on the physical machine will not protect the VM, nor will D+. If you allow all traffic between your physical machine LAN and the internal network used by VM, you may open some vulnerabilities.

Sandboxie only runs the application in a virtual environment, not the OS. It is a great product and I can’t wait for Comodo to release their version in CIS 4.

Hope it helps

Cheers

Well, I tried an experiment (according to M$, a firewall on the host doesn’t protect the VM), I blocked all traffic on the host just to see what would happen on the VM and guess what? M$ was WRONG - it also blocked all traffic on the VM. So…

But I did as M$ advised, I put the firewall and AV on the VM as well…

Tell me more about CIS 4 please…

And thanks for your advice about the updates - cause, I had to disable both firewalls and AVs on both VM and Host in order for XP to get SP3 on the VM - I don’t want to have to sit another 2 hours again…

Glad I could be of assistance.

For CIS 4, it should be out late this year or early next year in beta that is. You may want to check the Beta Corner forum for the latest developments etc.
