So yeah, i was doing some virus checks today and this question popped into my head. Could an hacker acces my pc when my pc is not connected to internet in anyway, and is it possible that when my pc is turned off, and by turning it off i mean that the power cable is not connected to the back of my computer, could an hacker still acces my pc? AND, could viruses or other malware do some critical damage to my registry, hardrive and other components?
Or, could an hacker only acces my pc when it is turned on and it is connected to internet? If hackers CAN acces my pc when it is not connected to internet and it is turned off, how in the heavens name can i survive possible attacks?
Answers are apreciated, if you understood anything i just wrote. Thanks. (L)
Ok… So a hacker cannot connect to your pc unless you are connected to the internet - and If you have a good firewall (Like Comodo) A hacker won’t be able to connect to you.
Malware can only do damage to your pc only if it’s turned on.
And on a personal note… I think you’re worrying too much. Just Relax A firewall and antivirus should keep you very secure.
Yes but then he has to have physical access to your system.
and is it possible that when my pc is turned off, and by turning it off i mean that the power cable is not connected to the back of my computer, could an hacker still acces my pc?
No unless physical access.
AND, could viruses or other malware do some critical damage to my registry, hardrive and other components?
If you are connected to the internet or connect with floppy/cd/dvd/usb drive etc and install stuff that way.
Most of the malware damages the software not the hardware. (have a offline backup of your important data).

Use a hardware firewall in your ISP Router, as a second layer use a software firewall on you pc(s), third use a good AV scanner, fourth install Secunia’s PSI (www.secunia.com) to keep your software up2date, and always use common sense, if something is shouting … click here click here… i’m free come and get me then stay away if it sounds to good to be true than believe it is to good to be true :-))
Or use non standard browsers like Firefox/Opera and media players like winamp or vlc player.
Most of the stuff is designed for Microsoft products
Hope this helps, don’t be to scared, just prepared.
Phew. Thankyou so much. (:HUG) And i think that i have pretty good reasons to worry about my pc, since i have gotten so many viruses, trojans, and other malware to my pc inside few months time. The only pages which i visit with this pc are Deviantart, Youtube, Newgrounds, Albinoblacksheep, few forums, Weebls-stuff, Games workshops pages, Forgeworld and my citys homepage. And my lil brothers use habbo on this pc, since it wont work for some reason on the other computers. The only pages wich i can think., that could insert some malware are habbo and deviantart O.o Allthough i could be also wrong. Anyways, thankyou again n.n
Do you have a wireless router? Even if it isn’t connected to the internet (but it is still broadcasting), I hacker might be able to connect to your network and somehow access your PC (if it is on). But it really help to have CFP. (:WIN)
Technically,
The Following Is False
“Malware can only do damage to your pc only if it’s turned on.”
(In Year 1990-2000, Malware could do damage while the computer is “Unplugged” because there is still power getting push around on the motherboard but a hacker can not infiltrate a system unless it has a connection to it wether it be a wireless router or vpn, or even wired connections (Phone Line, DSL, Network Hardware etc.)
“So a hacker cannot connect to your pc unless you are connected to the internet”
(Necessarily, a hacker can connect to your pc with out you connecting to the internet, but the last resort for a hacker to infiltrate a system would be through the network)
“If you have a good firewall (Like Comodo) A hacker won’t be able to connect to you.”
(It’s makes the job of a hacker a zillion times harder if you do have a hardware firewall & a software firewall, but it’s like 1 in a zillion that he/she will be able to get through… but then again CFP is a perfectionist job, I still am testing it so i know for my self that it is 100% Secure against “Hackers”… )
The Following Is Correct:
“Even if it isn’t connected to the internet (but it is still broadcasting), I hacker might be able to connect to your network and somehow access your”
Note:
If Still Broadcasting and If A Hacker Really wants in, he could use a connection to your cell phone to a server(or to your computer directly) to your computer…
Wireless can be hacked even if your computer is off, allowing someone to use your internet access to do harm elsewhere.
Try the following links to help set up your wireless:
The firewall is only as good as the policy that it is running !
What about having you “Local network” access your computer when u use the “New network wizard” and you select to allow local access, if the “hacker” breaches your WIFI he is ON your local network so you are no longer protected !
Sounds nasty :S Next question, how can i be 99% or even 100% sure that i have no sort of connection to internet, or to another place before i turn my computer off? And one thing that concerns me a bit is, that when i check my internet setup and connections after i have unplugged the cable between my modem and my pc, so that the green light in my modem shut’s down (Indicating that the cable is not plugged i nand that i am not connected to internet), it says on the setup screen that the network cable is unplugged BUT, it also says that there is another connection that my computer s part of. Says that it is secured with firewall and that no data is going in or out. It has been remowed from use (since im not sure what is happening) also. Says that it is called 1394-connection. Any idea what this could be? The good thing is though, that even if i decide to put it back on, no data travels in or out, and i can’t connect to internet if my cable is not inserted between my modem and my pc. So in a nutshell, when igo to controlpanel → internet connections, it shows two connections; 1349-connection and the connection i am currently using. So what the heck is this 1394?
Your internet connection actually comes in two parts. The first is the connection of your modem/router to the internet, which synchs to your ISP and is connected independently of your computer. The second is the connection of your modem/router to your computer, which is active only when your computer is on. Typical connection will keep the modem/router online, and available to anyone who requests an IP address on the associated LAN. So someone could hack your modem and router (potentially) while you are offline, but not your computer. That is a good reason for doing things like changing default router passwords. If you want to be sure there is no connection, hit the power switch on the modem.
IEEE 1394 is commonly known as Firewire or I-Link, and is the main alternative to USB2 for connecting high speed peripherals like hard drives to your computer. It also sometimes used to connect Network Interface Cards to your motherboard.
Hmm. This went interesting. Let’s say that a hcaker get’s inside my computer, despite the fact that i have comodo firewall pro. How can i get rid of this hacker then? Closing my modem? And how can i be sure that the hacker will have a much more difficulties ahead next time when he/she tries to acces my pc?
