Hi!
Because security is something that everybody should be entitled to if they are surfing the web no matter how rich or poor you are! And when you go to the roots of the computers software they were all free! So it could be taken as “remembering the good old days” as well!
And the real reason so many of us cant afford a commercial FW. So for the sake of “US” pls keep it free!
oh no please keep it free i’m just a pore persion i’m luckly to even be here on dialup my isp offers mcafee for free but i doin’t like it
also all of the ■■■■ on the internet (hackers, viruses, malware, rootkits) are free thay doin’t charge for catching them
If users didn’t have a free solution for a good firewall, they probably would be using Windows firewall or none at all. This would result in more ‘compromised and controlled’ machines expanding botnets which would lead to the eventual destruction of e-commerce or even the complete melt-down of the internet, not to mention the national security implications. ddos attacks are commonplace and the more ammunition (controlled computers) the bad guys have, the more damage they can do. This is coming from a person who is just a step above a newbie.
I also totally agree with the other two posts and they gave excellent answers. When I think of Comodo, which I haven’t heard of before the free firewall, I also think of trust. Must be a subliminal thing. I consider the Comodo Firewall as your flagship offering and as long as people are recommending ‘Comodo Firewall’, your name is getting publicity and the users are getting a great product. Oh, and the internet is a bit safer too. It’s a win win situation. You gotta love it!
Cheers, innerpeace
Why a (good) free firewall is needed:
The average user (which is probably the majority) knows little about firewalls or computer security. If they bought a new computer, it came with a firewall and AV, most likely. Once the subscription runs out, they may not be inclined to pay for more. Thus, they will be without protection (it either stops working or is just way out of date).
At that point, they either use nothing (oh, no!) or the Windows FW (better than nothing, but not by much…). They might also go ahead and get the updated bloatware license for what was originally installed on their machine. It gets progressively slower and slower, so they uninstall it or turn it off, in order to be able to do their online “thing.” Back to the beginning…
Then, as innerpeace noted, you have more compromised machines, the increase of botnets, and the blackhats take over the internet… Yikes!
Enter Comodo! By providing a free-of-charge replacement firewall that is better than anything else on the market (and did we mention, free?!), this provides an alternative to the average user to get state-of-the-art protection without the associated cost of the more common bloatware. This should help them to remain protected, and keep their computer secure.
The only barriers that I see are:
A sure-fire, trouble-free, hands-off, no-brainer Automatic install and configuration that will immediately work for each user’s setup
Word to get out, so that the user knows about it in the first place
LM
It is not important.
Do people get there computers for free?
Do they get there OS for free?
I just want a firewall that is powerful and flexible., and not full of ■■■■.
I will pay for that.
A ■■■■■ dealer gives away ■■■■■. Do not give it away anymore. If it is good they will pay or they have no business using the internet.
Just charge for the Comodo firewall and make some money. That is respectable. If you had shareholders you would realize that.
Just don’t overcharge.
People would pay for the Comodo Firewall (and other products if there was suddenly a charge), quality and relaibility is what most people are after.
It ain’t rocket science, Comodo is quality software and it’s free and that’s why it’s so popular, if there was a nominal charge i don’t think it would deminish it’s popularity.
Please keep it free…are there plans to charge…i hope not. (L)
I’m not sure if having a firewall is important or not. I can only relate to my own experience and say that it is essential. Why do we have doors and windows to our houses? Is it absolutely required? It is a matter of opinion and certain societal influences.
One thing I agree and feel that COMODO should charge a nominal fee, like a one time and it should be free for a lifetime. Consider this analogy … You want a lock on your door for a sense of security, you would buy it and that’s it, it is free for as long as you own it. There are no recurring charges, no subscription fees, etceteras. COMODO products should be the same way … buy once and it is free forever. Maybe people would be turned off by the word buy. How about become a lifetime member of COMODO for a nominal charge of $3.65 (amounts to a penny a day) and all the products are free forever. However there is one drawback with the paid system, people will make copies and start distributing it (some may even sell it for a profit).
I believe it is important to allow everybody access to free security technology, in some parts of the world what we (in the west) consider a “reasonable fee” is more than any responsible or decent person should spend on software. What Comodo are currently doing I consider vital to the future of the whole Internet no less (I kid not). CFP is in the front-line stopping the bot & zombie networks from taking over. Comodo are indeed creating trust on-line, but not just for us… the users… it also directly benefits all eCommerce corporations. I, for one, believe in what Comodo are doing and I give my time, as other Mods do, freely to this great cause.
Keeping it free to keep us safe. (V)
Yes I agree completely with your view point about free security technology, however right off the back you are giving something very valuable that is your time and service, and I take it that you are adept at computers and have the requisite skills and flair to solve problems, kind-of-a-handyman-with-computers. What about those poor souls like me that know “enough to be dangerous”, how do we contribute to this good cause? This is where I think donation drive comes into picture, like your local PBS station.
@ Snyder
What about those poor souls like me that know "enough to be dangerous", how do we contribute to this good cause?Heh, that reminds me of myself :)
I feel that I contribute indirectly in other ways. Not everybody has to be a security guru to help. I used Comodo firewall and liked it and felt safe with it running so I felt comfortable recommending it to users that are not that tech savvy. If I can answer a question or point them in the right direction, I do so. When I recommend Comodo firewall, the name Comodo is ‘put out there’. Just like if you hear people telling you to ‘google it’ or ‘use google, it’s your friend’. If you hear that enough and after some time, it’s a huge and successful company. Oh, and they got that way by giving away free services/features. It’s a business model that works for some bold companies.
As a side note, if they start charging money, people will use the other free bloatware versions or go to the older non-supported versions or worse yet, they may go without a firewall. If that happens and they compromise your system, you probably would re-think your descision to make a great, free firewall into a paid version. I’m not trying to be mean or argue and I do think Comodo FW is worth money. I also think my free AV is great and worth money. I also think my secure, free setup is stable and I recommend all my programs which gains peoples trust in that company. I’m a member of a few different forums and word of mouth advertising gets a lot of customers for businesses. If us ‘geeks’ like it, then we recommended it to our ‘technically challenged’ friends and family using there computers, clicking on any link or pop-up and opening all email attachments. Heh
Because You(Melih) said it was free Forever!!! :BNC
And i trust you and you said you aare trying to build customer trust as well as brand recognition.
I wishg you and comodo the and hope to help you along on your jorny to secure the internet (:CLP) :■■■■
But I think that by giving away some quality products and helping to secure the inet. you can help build on peoples awarness of the issues and help build peoples trust in the use of the web. and at the same time help build on peoples faith that not all corporations are money grubing Microsofts. I just hope that you(Melih) are in it for the long haul to ofter someone starts to build agood thing and then some corporate monoply comes along and buys them out. In not what was once a good thing is now bloatware and costs a fortune
I want to get CSE up and running
an look forward to CAV being able to support SSL. I thought NAV10.0 corp did but I was wrong!!!
