Firewall uses all my internet connection

I installed COMODO on my Win XP second edition. I then used the internet and found that I could not load on Google with Firefox or download my e-mails using Mailwasher. It only showed 7 to 8 bits per second. I had it set on custom and allowed everything that I wanted to link with the internet from my computer. I then turned it of and everything was fine. Tried to access the software again to look at setting and all though I can see the shield icon on the task bar and the desktop nothing appears. Most strange??!! Any suggestions?

Ok here is extra - Have enabled it again by restarting my comp. But the bits per sec on my 56k modem are really reduced. I usually get 28,000 bits per sec or more, I am now only getting 14,400 down to 7,000 bits per sec.
