Firefox won't download - "the source file could not be read" error

After updating to CIS 8, Firefox will now no longer download files properly. It seems to especially affect exe files as Firefox attempts to create a .exe.part file in the Temp file as specified by the Windows Environment Variables. Currently the only posted fix is to completely uninstall and reinstall CIS 8.

A. THE BUG/ISSUE (Varies from issue to issue)
Can you reproduce the problem & if so how reliably?:
It can be reproduced about 90% of the time.
If you can, exact steps to reproduce. If not, exactly what you did & what happened:
1:Using Firefox, attempt to download an EXE file.
2:?
3:?
One or two sentences explaining what actually happened:
When attempting to download the exe file, you receieve an error that reads, “…exe.part could not be saved, because an unknown error occurred…Try saving to a different location.”
One or two sentences explaining what you expected to happen:
The exe file should have simply saved to the specified download directory.
If a software compatibility problem have you tried the advice to make programs work with CIS?:
Yes
Any software except CIS/OS involved? If so - name, & exact version:
Due to the infrequent reports, I suspect that NOD32 in combination with CIS could be the culprit.
Any other information, eg your guess at the cause, how you tried to fix it etc:
When Comodo Firewall is uninstalled, the problem goes away. This is a bug that has appeared only with the latest version of CIS. The previous version did not have this issue.

B. YOUR SETUP
Exact CIS version & configuration:
Comodo Firewall v 8.0.0.4344-
HIPS- Safe Mode
Firewall- Custom Ruleset
Comodo Firewall Security is active.
Modules enabled & level. D+/HIPS, Autosandbox/BBlocker, Firewall, & AV:
HIPS
Autosandbox
Firewall
Have you made any other changes to the default config? (egs here.):
Just made an autosandbox exception for OFX file type.
Have you updated (without uninstall) from CIS 5, 6 or 7?:
No
if so, have you tried a a a clean reinstall - if not please do?:
N/A
Have you imported a config from a previous version of CIS:
No
if so, have you tried a standard config - if not please do:
N/A
OS version, SP, 32/64 bit, UAC setting, account type, V.Machine used:
WIndows 7 SP SP1 64-bit, UAC Off, Admin Account, Not running in a virtual environment
Other security/s’box software a) currently installed b) installed since OS, including initial trial security software included with system:
a= b=NOS32

Please don’t cross post. I answered to one of your two posts about this in the help section.

Sorry…I wasn’t attempting to cross-post. I wanted to put this issue here so it is listed as a bug with the program. I can tell you that is issue is fairly consistent as I was having this exact issue with the save version of Comodo Firewall on a previous Windows installation. The only thing that makes the problem go away permanently is to uninstall Comodo Firewall. I hope that the devs can look into this and see if they can figure out what is causing this to happen.

Can you please edit your post using the required format: https://forums.comodo.com/bug-reports-cis/required-format-for-reporting-bugs-t102284.0.html;msg743135#msg743135

Sure! No problem…I’ll take a look at the format and try to provide more information.

can you post an example link to a download where this bug happens?

Yes, is very interesting what’s the file(s) you try to download. I haven’t any problems with Firefox on Win7.

Oops, sorry, didn’t notice that the problem is only present on CIS 8.

My previous question still stands

Hi, here’s a link to an exe that seems to cause problems.

Just click the download button to download the exe file on the page.

There is no problem to download this file.
Firefox 35.0
CIS8.0:
Firewall - Custom;
HIPS - Safe;
Autosandbox - OFF;
Viruscope - OFF;
Website filtering - OFF.

It seems like collision between Comodo and NOD32 modules. Since v5 NOD32 has own HIPS, maybe it’s a problem.

I wonder…can anyone else here maybe use a trial version of NOD32 to see if they can recreate the issue? I noticed that the previous version of CIS doesn’t have these issues. Also, I noticed that I have no problem downloading files using Chrome.

Could you remove NOD32 and then run its clean up tool? The problem is happening on your system.

Hmm…I have a 2-year subscription with NOD32 so I don’t think that uninstalling the software would be feasible. I can probably test to see if uninstalling NOD32 fixes the issue. I CAN say that removing Comodo fixed the issue until it was reinstalled again.

Your subscription doesn’t disappear on temporary uninstalling. Until you can say that removing NOD32 don’t fix this problem, it’s talk about nothing.

Temporarily uninstalling is what we want. That way we can see if the problem is because of interaction between NOD32 and CIS.

I CAN say that removing Comodo fixed the issue until it was reinstalled again.
We prefer the other test scenario with CIS installed first and then NOD32.

Right click and run Firefox as admin. Then you should be able to save anywhere. I’ve seen this before.

Report back. :slight_smile:

Hi, I launched Firefox as admin and tried downloading the file again. It looks like I was still unable to download the file.

Try this :

Open a new tab and type about:config ,hit enter, and then I’ll be careful

Type encoding into the search box and double click on network.http.accept-encoding

Remember or save the text in the box (just in case)

Delete all the text and click OK

Now try to download

Hi,
BTW, I just reloaded Windows one more time to make sure that it’s not just a bad installation or viruses. I am having the same issue again with Firefox. Removing the data under about:config for network.http.accept-encoding doesn’t seem to fix the issue either. I wonder if there is an issue with NOD32 + Comodo Firewall 8…
