Symptoms & Reproduction:

  1. Everything running fine with Comodo Firewall 2.4, that is to say Firefox does properly start and end. After exiting Firefox, no process resists in the task manager. Internet Explorer also not making any problems.

  2. No changes are made, except for:

  • deinstallation of Comodo Firewall 2.4
  • restart
  • installation of Comodo 3.0.13.266 with option Defense+ activated
  • restart
  • updating Comodo via update function to version 3.0.13.268
  • restart
  1. Starting Firefox 2.0.0.9; closing Firefox
  • now firefox.exe persists in the task manager and takes up 30 mb of memory
  • firefox.exe cannot be killed, runs forever; even after logoff; only restart kills the process
  • can start Firefox a second time though; now having two firefox.exe in memory
  • closing Firefox again; now having two firefox.exe processes running forever
  • starting Firefox a 3rd time; now having three processes running
  • etc.
  1. Starting Internet Explorer, closing Internet Explorer
  • process remains in memory (IEXPLORE.exe), cannot be killed
  • starting IExplorer a 2nd time; but having only one process running
  • closing IExplorer again; and again IEXPLORE.exe residing in memory and not killable
  • however, IExplorer does not produce two processes running parallely

Additonal note:
After the occurance of the Firefox problem, restarting the system is a pain in the ■■■. Choosing “Restart” first does nothing. Had to choose “Restart” three times, before anything happened. Windows then takes ages to logoff and shutdown.

How to resolve this problem:

Disabling Defense+ via tray icon does not change behaviour; but completely deactivating Defense+ in ‘advanced > settings’ brings the solution;

  • after deactivating Defense+ and restarting, everything works fine again
  • no firefox.exe or iexplore.exe residing in memory after exiting those applications
  • Windows now again normally logging off and shutting down

I have observed (and have previously reported) this same problem in Vista Home Premium several times.
