"Explorer cannot dispaly the webpage" error after upgrade/uninstall/cleaner

First, I 've loved using your product for the past year and a half or so. With the exception of finding the upgrade and install process somewhat inconsistent, you have a great product and I look forward to continuing to use it.

My problem started a few days ago when I went to upgrade a Toshiba Satellite notebook from v4 to v5. The machine is on a local home network running through a router and separate modem.

The upgrade took a long time, but when it finished it did not update the virus definititions etc. automatically. Neither could I update the definitions manually. I tried updating the defs several more times to no effect. I believe that this was where my first symptom of loss of connectivity occured, although I did not realise that at the time.

I figured that the upgrade was corrupted and so used the Comodo uninstaller. Unfortunately, I have not been able to connect to the web (I’m writing this from the other computer on the home network) to try reinstalling v5.

I have been able to connect to the router and the modem separately. Explorer will start up but simply wont access the web, giving the “Explorer cannot display the webpage” error.

I have searched these forums and tried all the steps recommended here on the thread for what to do when experienceing problems with installes/upgrades (Revo uninstaller and CIS Clean Up Toool and Comodo System Cleaner 3.0).

What is left for me to try? Your help is appreciated.

Hello;

You stated that this method will not work?
(Uninstall CIS using add/remove programs; then rebooting, then run the batch again ; reboot ; then run the batch again)

If that did not work;
Can you open Command Prompt (Start > Programs > acc > Command prompt)
type in
ping www.google.com
Did you receive somewhat like this? “Reply From xx.xxx.xx.x. : bytes=32…”
If Not, Can you try the following commands
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew

and then trying to connect to the internet;

Please report back;

Hope this helps

Jake

Wow! Thanks for the quick reply Jake. I wished I had taken my time getting off the forum after posting.

I ran your scripts and found that somehow my TCP DNS setting had somehow changed from the automatic detect to a specified one, on both machines! I changed it back and that seemed to allow me to get back online. Also, somehow IE 8 had been wiped out. I’m wondering if there was a problem with the download of the afore mentioned utilities or malware present…?

Fortunately I had access to a IT compentent friend who talked me through downloading and reinstalling IE8 again. Is there a known conflict with the latest CIS and IE8? He seemed to think there was. We tried installing IE7 at first but for some reason were unsuccessful so had to go with IE 8 once more reinstalled.

So the machine with the original problem (laptop xp sp3 ie8) seems fine running IE8 except that it does not have any AV at the moment. My friend suggested that with the router it would cause fewer conflicts running AV only without multiple firewalls (router + Windows firewall + CIS firewall. Since I have a solid router/firewall would I be OK going with the Comodo AV only instead of CIS?

With my second maching(desktop XP with SP3) is running fine except that it hangs up after boot up for an hour or more and at some point cmdagent.exe runs while at the same time over 200 outbound connection are active… The DNS settings have not changed for a few boot ups and remain on the automatic setting as I understand they should… any suggestions on why all the sudden I’m having this kind of problem? I have run Comodo CIS on this machine with no problems for a few months now (behind a router with Windows firewall and Comodo firewall active)…? Are there some settings I need to look at? I don’t have the “block all unkown requests” checked etc. and frankly hadn’t changed my settings from what had been working for several weeks on the desktop.

You may recall from the earlier post that this all began with an unuccessful CIS update from v4 to v5 on the laptop, after which I lost internet connection so I used the Comodo uninstaller and then searched the forum and downloaded the CIS scrubber and Revo Uninstaller as recommended via the desktop on the same LAN to shared folders to the laptop.

I have seen that one of your machine has windows firewall on… disable it; having two firewalls at the same time can cause problems. You only need CIS.

Enjoy your stay here.

Not exactly, if you read my post carefully you will see that I used to have the mulitple firewalls on without any conflicts, but currently I do not.

At this point, my desktop is taking over an hour + to become usable after boot up with over 200 outgoing connections via cmdagent.exe. I only have the router firewall active and even deactivated the defense + .

the router’s firewall has nothing to do with CIS; the router has a harddriver firewall and CIS is a software so they are at two different level.

I have had once a Dlink router there I could add what ip addresses should be allowed and I assume that would be the routers firewall.

I will look for the more accurate answer.

There are no known compatibility issues with IE 8 as far as I know. Scanning for malware with various scanner never hurts here.

A router's firewall only helps to keep unsolicited access out. It will allow all outgoing connections and as such does nothing to protect once you are infected.

Did you recently install a new program that starts with Windows? If that is the case. Try the workarounds in App. is not working correctly, but does not seem to be s/boxed. What to do? [v5] and see if they fix it for you or not. You will have to make the suggested changes in Windows Safe Mode.

Thank you for your replies.

One last question: What about issues with latest verstion of CIS and XP service pack 3? Are there known issues between them?

That’s what I’m running and I have had no problems.
