Greetings fellow sufferers…
Do you find that your AV updates are freezing at 30% ?.. getting Failed to Update, check Internet connection messages?..
There MAY be nothing wrong… I get the same messages periodically… I just tell CIS to try again… and guess what?.. the little message box just informed me that the virus database updated successfully…
Now before you lose it in my general direction, consider ALL of the following…
1)… Do you have a fairly recent version of the CIS software itself? …
Look under “Miscellaneous” , “About” … mine currently reads 3.13.125662.579 …
Be aware that you can download a newer version than mine …3.14.130099.587 at the moment… Look under the F.A.Q.'s on this forum for the link… I’m choosing to wait until the much-touted vaporware ver. 88)FOUR 88) is actually released before I download again, but that’s my choice… your situation may be different…
2)… Do you know your current Virus Signature Database Version?..
Look in the same place as 1) … mine just updated from 3858 to 3866
Be aware that you can also download the almost latest version of the AV signatures via a link on these forums… It’s a bit more difficult, there may be issues with the database format, depending on what version of the software itself that you are running, and the link is buried a little deeper within these forums… but it’s nice to know that it’s there, right?

Do yourself a favor… shut off the AV Automatic Update…
Look under “Anti Virus”, “Scanner Settings”, “Manual Scanning” and UNCHECK the box “Automatically update…etc” … Also Look under “Real-Time Scanning” & “Scheduled Scanning” and uncheck that box in those areas too. But remember, once you do this, you are in charge and responsible for making sure your updates get done on a regular basis… -
As soon as I go on-line, each and every session, I open my CIS console, go to “Anti-Virus” , “Update Virus Database” and click on it to get the latest AV signature update. The “Anti-Virus Update” dialog
box opens and the process begins
The following USUALLY happens… I get to 5% immediately, a moment or two later I get to 30% and then I … w…a…i…t… Presently , IF the servers here aren’t experiencing heavy loads due to a new software release or the like, I get to 51% and then c…r…a…w…l… upwards to reach 100% after several minutes.
I’ve found that just because things appear to stall at 30% does NOT necessarily mean that they have… There appears to be a direct correlation between the time elapsed since my last AV update and how long the next one takes to complete… If I’m not on-line for a couple of days, I pay the price, but at least this way I have control over WHEN my machine will be using it’s CPU exclusively to accommodate CIS AV updating. (LIstening YET, developers???)
- If you get the “Failed to update…etc” message, just click that “Update Virus Database” again. Itf the AV update fails again, click it again… Today, it took three tries before I hooked on to the server and got my update going…
If you want to better understand what is going on under the hood when you experience a problem with getting an AV update in, go to “Summary”, “Network Defense” and click on the little blue number in front of “Outbound Connections” … This will open your"Active Connections" window… scroll down the list of active connections and look for “cmdagent.exe” … This is the updating program doing it’s thing …
Sometimes, you can see that program walking it’s way down a sequence of server addresses as it searches for a hook to link to… doesn’t always work… and THAT’s when I get the “Failed to…” message…
When the updater does link up, the size of the number on that line of the “bytes In” column will start to increase… gradually leading to the “virus database updated successfully” …
- If you have 16 cores, 19 gb of DDR9 memory, Windows 7.36, or a Ultra fibre T-1 direct connection to the Net, and ESPECIALLY if you are using a version. 88) FOUR 88) beta and are prone to sniff that you haven’t seen any such problems, then I am very happy for you, but this message is for those…
“Experiencing update problems? … XP SP3? , single core?, dial-up? …Read!!”
Thanks… Hope this helps someone who had the same problems as I did…
Oh yeah, and Worshipful Comodo Heroes… If I have any of the facts wrong, I for one, am willing to listen…
