Experiencing update problems? ... XP SP3? , single core?, dial-up? ...Read!!

Greetings fellow sufferers…

Do you find that your AV updates are freezing at 30% ?.. getting Failed to Update, check Internet connection messages?..

There MAY be nothing wrong… I get the same messages periodically… I just tell CIS to try again… and guess what?.. the little message box just informed me that the virus database updated successfully…

Now before you lose it in my general direction, consider ALL of the following…

1)… Do you have a fairly recent version of the CIS software itself? …
Look under “Miscellaneous” , “About” … mine currently reads 3.13.125662.579 …

Be aware that you can download a newer version than mine …3.14.130099.587 at the moment… Look under the F.A.Q.'s on this forum for the link… I’m choosing to wait until the much-touted vaporware ver. 88)FOUR 88) is actually released before I download again, but that’s my choice… your situation may be different…

2)… Do you know your current Virus Signature Database Version?..
Look in the same place as 1) … mine just updated from 3858 to 3866

Be aware that you can also download the almost latest version of the AV signatures via a link on these forums… It’s a bit more difficult, there may be issues with the database format, depending on what version of the software itself that you are running, and the link is buried a little deeper within these forums… but it’s nice to know that it’s there, right?

  1. Do yourself a favor… shut off the AV Automatic Update…
Look under “Anti Virus”, “Scanner Settings”, “Manual Scanning” and UNCHECK the box “Automatically update…etc” … Also Look under “Real-Time Scanning” & “Scheduled Scanning” and uncheck that box in those areas too. But remember, once you do this, you are in charge and responsible for making sure your updates get done on a regular basis…

  2. As soon as I go on-line, each and every session, I open my CIS console, go to “Anti-Virus” , “Update Virus Database” and click on it to get the latest AV signature update. The “Anti-Virus Update” dialog
box opens and the process begins

The following USUALLY happens… I get to 5% immediately, a moment or two later I get to 30% and then I … w…a…i…t… Presently , IF the servers here aren’t experiencing heavy loads due to a new software release or the like, I get to 51% and then c…r…a…w…l… upwards to reach 100% after several minutes.

I’ve found that just because things appear to stall at 30% does NOT necessarily mean that they have… There appears to be a direct correlation between the time elapsed since my last AV update and how long the next one takes to complete… If I’m not on-line for a couple of days, I pay the price, but at least this way I have control over WHEN my machine will be using it’s CPU exclusively to accommodate CIS AV updating. (LIstening YET, developers???)

  1. If you get the “Failed to update…etc” message, just click that “Update Virus Database” again. Itf the AV update fails again, click it again… Today, it took three tries before I hooked on to the server and got my update going…

If you want to better understand what is going on under the hood when you experience a problem with getting an AV update in, go to “Summary”, “Network Defense” and click on the little blue number in front of “Outbound Connections” … This will open your"Active Connections" window… scroll down the list of active connections and look for “cmdagent.exe” … This is the updating program doing it’s thing …

Sometimes, you can see that program walking it’s way down a sequence of server addresses as it searches for a hook to link to… doesn’t always work… and THAT’s when I get the “Failed to…” message…

When the updater does link up, the size of the number on that line of the “bytes In” column will start to increase… gradually leading to the “virus database updated successfully” …

  1. If you have 16 cores, 19 gb of DDR9 memory, Windows 7.36, or a Ultra fibre T-1 direct connection to the Net, and ESPECIALLY if you are using a version. 88) FOUR 88) beta and are prone to sniff that you haven’t seen any such problems, then I am very happy for you, but this message is for those…

Thanks… Hope this helps someone who had the same problems as I did…

Oh yeah, and Worshipful Comodo Heroes… If I have any of the facts wrong, I for one, am willing to listen…

UPDATE!..

Well, here it is March 14th and here we sit again, stuck at 30% on the Update indicator, forced into downloading yet another complete reset of the AV database… (23 mb and still climbing)… courtesy of the fact that the Comodo AV Updater server dropped the ball while an update was under way…

OOps, guess we get to download ALL those signatures all over … AGAIN!.. .

Gee, wouldja look at that, the AV Auto Updating function is STILL NOT PAUSEABLE / RESUMEABLE…

Please note, fellow sufferers, that my little dissertation here drew no response from the Gurus in all that time… Hummm, maybe they know it’s the TRUTH?..

So, maybe if every one of us who is experiencing these headaches posts about them EVERY TIME they happen, the programmers will get the idea that they NEED to FIX this issue… ???

UPDATE!!..

Well, here it is March 19th and we are all up to date again…

The download I was doing during my last post on this topic ended up having mysterious issues… my other thread on this forum concerning Manual Updates covers all of that… so, since I was going to be downloading the full AV signature database again anyway, I decided to install the new CIS Version 4…

PROS… Have to say that it is very well behaved so far… the downloading function is very much improved … doesn’t appear to hog CPU cycles anywhere near as much as CIS ver. 3.13 …

CONS… there is still no way to pause/resume the auto update download.

So if you are having update problems typical with older iron &/or dial-up… dropped connections, timeouts, loooooooong download times, you just might find that version 4 will help you out a bit.

The issue you described in the other topic is probably caused by a problem with that update. It is not something I could reproduces over three different installation over three different versions of Windows.

It is a royal pain up our rear ends there is no resuming function with the AV downloader. That being said I am wondering if there may be are also problems with your internet connection?

Well Eric, I just had this forum poster eat my reply that I spend an hour on… so you’ll have to be content with the short version…

The telco tested our line … nothing wrong on this end…

The errant AV sig. file was downloaded 3 different times, twice on this machine, one on another… all 3 downloads exhibited the same anomalous behavior with both the original CIS 3.13 install and also with the fresh ver. 4 install… download corruption IS possible , but kinda unlikely given that 3 trys all failed in the same manner.

So we let the auto downloader run on the ver. 4 install and bingo, we are at 4319 today…

I believe one of our interns has plans to download the latest manual AV sig. file this weekend to test again… I expect that everything will work just fine…

There’s more to our findings, but it’ll have to wait

I’ll post again here once the next test is complete…

Let us know how things go.

UPDATE! …

Well Folks, it’s been a while … and we are delighted to report that even though the old manse is STILL on dial–up, we have not experienced a single problem with the excellent CIS since our last visit here in March…

we’re up into the 7000’s on the AV sig’s #

?? how is Version 5 working out for you??
