I’m setting up a brand-new Lenovo laptop for my father, and I’m getting the error message in the subject when I attempt to install CIS (planning to use only the Firewall component).
“Error 109: Not able to extract InCompatSw.ini”
This appears after I select the language to run the installer with. Have no idea what’s wrong.
- Windows Vista
- Logged in as administrator and given UAC the thumbs-up
- Laptop comes with Symantec trial, but was uninstalled completely
- No other third-party firewall software installed
- Windows Firewall not running
- Avast AV is installed but disabled while attempting to install
Help?
What version of Vista are you using? 32 bits or 64 bits?
Try installing with UAC disabled; you need to reboot for this.
Did you use Norton removal tool when uninstalling Norton: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 ?
I am not familiar with Avast but found a topic recently where Kasperksy AV did a bad job interfering with CIS. Are there logs in Avast you can consult?

facepalm
I thought the OS was 32-bits because 64-bits wasn’t mentioned anywhere in the product description when the laptop was purchased. Turns out it’s 64-bits after all and I was trying to install the 32-bit version of CIS on it. Once I got the right install EXE everything was peachy-keen.
Thanks for the tip on the Norton Removal tool anyway; there was some leftover garbage that Vista failed to clear out (mostly LiveUpdate stuff) that it picked up.
It may be that you don’t have Service Pack 2 installed.
