I am a new member and stupid. My version of comodo is 3.5.57173.439.
If I tick the box for “Block all the unknown requests if the application is closed” will it interfere with updates of software such as java?

No, I doubt it. That just means that if CIS is closed/shutdown, it will block unknown requests. If you don’t close CIS, if you update all you should get is an alert and you can allow it.
