Crypt32 auto update retrieval failure

Good evening,

I am using a Compaq Presario AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor 3300+, 2411MHz/1.93 GBs RAM, running Windows Xp Home, SP3., with IE8.

Lately I notice I have been getting the following error message in the ‘Application’ section of my ‘Event Viewer’. I am just curious if anyone thinks that maybe my Comodo Firewall could have something to do with this failed retrieval problem?

When searching the internet some folks pointed a finger at CIS. I am using Comodo Firewall 3.8.65951.477.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: crypt32
Event Category: None
Event ID: 8
Date: 3/31/2009
Time: 2:07:00 PM
User: N/A
Computer: XXXXXXXXXXX
Description:
Failed auto update retrieval of third-party root list sequence number from: http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/authrootseq.txt with error: This operation returned because the timeout period expired.

Thanks and regards,

Hello 2h4e,

I`m using CIS 3.8.477 on XP sp3,not that it helps but mine is ok.Have you tried doing a going to windows update manually?

Matt

Just one other thing! In IE8,make sure you have these sites set in “Trusted Sites” i had to manually add them

Control Panel/Internet Options/Security/Trusted Sites/Sites/Uncheck the box “Require server verification(https:) for all sites in this zone” while adding/Add these sites

http://.update.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com
http://update.microsoft.com
https://
.update.micosoft.com
https://update.microsoft.com

Re-check server verification box.

Don`t know if this will sort the problem but when i went to the update site via IE8 it said to do this

Morning Matty_R,

Talk about a coincidence. Right after reading your response this morning I checked in my ‘Event Viewer’ and take a guess at what I found. You’re right … Crypt32 had successfully completed an auto update retrieval.

This successful update occurred about 10 hours after the entry noting the failure of the update. Go figure! ???

So for now I will let well enough alone and not put any of the sites you recommended into my Trusted Zones and see what happens the next few times Crypt32 trys updating the root certificates.

I appreciate your response and recommendations. :-TU

Thanks and regards,

It`s a known error related to certificates updates. You can update them manually. Download and execute the .exe from this link: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/rootsupd_afc57447f7caadd3253333e35777fcd.exe

Morning Bruja,

After executing it nothing happened. Is that the way it is supposed to work? In other words, if an update is available it will be downloaded, … if not … you get no notification?

Thanks and regards,

2harts4ever

You don`t get a notification. Just restart and see if there are any new crypt32 errors in the event viewer. If the update has been installed you should not receive more errors. I myself keep the Windows Auto Update feature disabled.

Hi again Bruja,

Okay … thanks for the additional information. I will keep checking and see how it goes. I haven’t had any updates since Jan. 8 and that one was successful.

Thanks and regards,

2harts4ever

Hi Bruja,

Sorry to say your fix didn’t work for me after all. Checked my event viewer yesterday morning and had a Crypt32 auto update retrieval failure.
So, I guess I will be content to just wait for it to successfully update which it always has done in the past.

Regards,
