CPF keeps crashing

Hi All,

Just installed Comodo firewall, and love it when it runs. The problem I’ve been having is that after the firewall has been up for 5 minutes or so it crashes with the following error message.
AppName: cpf.exe AppVer: 2.2.0.11 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 77657269

Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

Thanks

Thanks, I fixed the problem…more or less. Apparently there is a problem with the auto-update feature. When I disabled auto-updating the problem went away. I did test this by letting Comodo run for an hour or so, then I re-enabled auto-updating. It crashed within 5 minutes. So I disabled auto-updating again, and have been running for over an hour now with no problems.

Thanks for the post! I just now created an account for the purpose of posting on the very same problem when I noticed your entry.

I’ve been running CPF for a couple of weeks (having pitched Sygate PF), kept getting the same error, and couldn’t get this resolved through Tech Support (via email). I’ve just disabled the auto-update and so far so good.

Interesting thing about the crash and CPF needing to close: Imediatelly following a crash, I tested CPF at the well-known Shields Up! web site (http://www.grc.com) and got perfect stealth ratings when testing the both the common ports and the extended port test. Thus the firewall remained functional even after the GUI closed.

The performance of CPF is impressive and PC Mag recently gave it a glowing review and Editor’s Choice.

You need to remember that if your internet connection is behind a router, ShieldsUp is testing the first ports it finds on the return path and these would be the ports of your router, not of your PC. For ShieldsUp to accurately test the IP ports of your PC, the PC has to have a direct connection to the internet, or for your router to have “forward all” set for the IP address of the PC you want to test.

Ah, ShieldsUP - why bother with technology when a layer of flimflam over a sliver of truth will do?

Hope this helps,

I first started using CPF just prior to 2.2.0.11… even now (after updating to 2.2.0.11), I have seen the updater application run in the system tray, and my CPF is always running.

So, this got me thinking what I might have configured (prior to 2.2.0.11) that allowed my current version to behave properly.

I may be reaching, but do you have any Application Rule(s) defined for “C:\Program Files\Comodo\LaunchPad\CLPUpdater.exe” that Allows TCP out and UDP in/out? If not, it may be that the new version doesn’t like asking for connectivity.

Just a thought. (CLY)

Thanks for the info on a work around. I have been having the same exact problem with cpf and sent the error specifics to support and am waiting for a reply back. To go further after reading this post I restarted the firewall pulled the gui up and hit the updater button. CPF immediately crashed with th same error message. After restarting the firewall and disabling the auto update the CPF is now running like a champ. I am curious to find out what the software development team finds as far as the update problem.
With that said I am also running the Comodo antivirus, a very good firewall for sure especially with the scan scheduler, and the auto updater is working beautifully with no problems.
Again thanks for the workaround and hopefully an update is forthcoming in the future.

I just downloaded and installed Comodo Personal Firewall today. The program crashed something like 10 times in the first 90 minutes. I was going to uninstall it, but I decided to see if I could find an answer first. I had to read through 22 pages of index to get to this one :-), but it did give me the answer. I disabled the auto updates and cpf has not crashed even once since then. Thanks, y’all.

Hi, Irish, I would like to mention that the beta 2.3 is great and the final of 2.3 will be out friday some time.

Hey all,
Just got the newest version of cpf and installed it. I am still unable to use the auto update feature as the firewall keeps crashing with the auto update features enabled. I unchecked both auto update features in the firewall settings and the firewall has not crashed. I did send in a ticket to support with the previous 2.2 version of the firewall and never heard back. Hope this is something that can be fixed in the future. Other than that the firewall is spectacular other than the auto update problem.

Typically this will point back to Windows. Are you running the latest SP2? Make sure you have all updates. I would like to guarantee but can’t that it’s an IE issue. Right click IE icon, properties, advanced, restore default. Click ok, close it out. Make sure Windows firewall is disabled, in advanced, make sure LAN is UNCHECKED, also , in general make sure those settings ARE CHECKED, not unchecked. If you have \use online games or have some sort of feature installed, this can cause this error with updaters as well. This is mostly guess work but if you can give me details on your OS\browser , etc…we can work this out.

Cheers,

Paul

Thanks for the info on this. I am running windows xp sp2 with all the latest security updates installed. I am running internet explorer 7.0 beta 3 on the machine. I went and did the steps you described and tried the update feature in the firewall. I got the same problem but was able to send and error report to support right after the firewall crashed.

Ok an update. I had to redo my computer from scratch this weekend. When I had windows xp up i installed the latest comodo firewall and got it running. I then got the crash problem. Well i turned off auto updates and restarted the firewall. I then got all the updates for windows xp over the weekend. This morning I decided to try the update button for the firewall and had no problems. I then turned on the auto update feature for the firewall and the firewall has not crashed. I waited a half hour just to make sure and everything is running great. Don’t know what happened but I don’t have the problem any longer.
