Config - Would you like to save your changes ... Yes, No, Cancel

When a setting is changed in Advanced Settings and OK is pressed then the changed setting gets activated in the current active config and the change is saved to the registry.

When switching to another config (making that active) you get asked “Would you like to save your changes to the current configuration before switching configurations?” One can choose to select from Yes, No and Cancel (the latter is obvious).

My question is: What exactly happens when one selects Yes and what happens when one selects No with regard to the changes that were made to the active config after pressing OK in the Advanced Settings window and where to are those settings saved when choosing Yes?
Once a setting is changed in an active config and OK is pressed in the Advanced Settings window then the changed setting gets saved to the registry already?

This is still a bit puzzling to me.

Could someone shed some light on this please?

This question has already been asked on the forum; Comodo did not provide a response.

I don’t know if this is the best way to do it but this is how I practice :

  • I export the configuration then I re-import it and activate it;
  • I keep the previous configuration;
  • my last way of doing it when exporting, I answer No to the question about the update. The re-imported configuration is up to date and ok.

Yep no response, hence I have asked the question again.

What would be the difference between switching configs and selecting Yes or No to the dialog question “Would you like to save your changes to the current configuration before switching configurations?”?
I think there is no difference as all settings that are being made or changed are always being changed in and written into the registry at the time when you choose OK in the Advanced Settings window.

So it looks to me as if the dialog question is redundant.
But I could be wrong in my assumption, so if Comodo could clarify things up that would help a lot (for all).

FYI and maybe an answer to your question.

Following my answer No, if I reactivate the previous configuration it does not include the changes I made since it was first activated.

Here is a simple test to reproduce what I mean:

  1. Make sure to have two identical configs (let’s call them A and B) on the config list (export the active one (A) and then import again using another config name (B)).
  2. If you have the desktop Widget switched off then switch it on (or do the opposite: switch it from on to off).
  3. Press the OK button in the “Advanced Settings” window to close the “Advanced Settings” window.
  4. Go back into the “Advanced Settings” window.
  5. Now make the other identical config (B) active and answer NO to the question. (No need to press OK button of “Advanced Settings” window.)
  6. Revert to the previous identical config (A) and make that active again and answer again NO to the question. (Also here, no need to press OK button of “Advanced Settings” window.)
  7. Now watch the Desktop widget, it has opposite state compared to the state of start of this test step 1.
The widget now is on when it was set to off, or off when it was set to on.

The change in Widget setting in step 2 WAS saved despite answering NO to the question.
To put it stronger, answering YES to the question makes no difference, the same happens.

So, the question dialog looks is redundant.

Could mods or staff please clarify how this dialog question “Would you like to save your changes to the current configuration before switching configurations?” is supposed to work when choosing Yes or No?

And, why not just reducing the dialog to simply “Are you sure to switch to another configuration?” with Ok and Cancel buttons?

Hi CISfan,

Thank you for reporting, we are checking this.

Hi C.O.M.O.D.O RT,

Thank you kindly for checking this.

If you don’t mind, I would like to add the following:

When exporting the active configuration there is this dialog question: “Would you like to save your changes to the current configuration before exporting it?” which, in my opinion, is also redundant because once the OK button of “Advanced Settings” window is pressed after making setting changes there is nothing to save anymore (everything gets saved to the registry already when pressing OK).
So I think this dialog can be removed completely just to make things easier and simpler.

Hello C.O.M.O.D.O RT and CISfan,

I am less positive than CISfan.

Personally I answer No to the question when exporting the configuration. Then I import this exported configuration and activate it.

I found that if I then re-enable the previous configuration it does not have the changes made since its previous activation. This would be consistent with the fact of being able to change configuration without having to import previous exports.

Hi domo78 and all,

Look from this angle, try the following steps right after each other:

Do export your active configuration and answer the dialog with Yes.
Do again export your active configuration and answer the dialog again with Yes.
Do again export your active configuration and answer the dialog again with Yes.
Do again export your active configuration and answer the dialog again with Yes.

The key point here is that those dialogs always keep appearing even when there’s absolutely nothing to save.

When nothing needs to be saved because it has been already saved then please don’t show these confusing dialogs.
