In addition to the very high levels of computer security that Comodo offers it has allowed me to do something that I never could come close to doing with my computer in the past when I was using bloated security software from Symantec and PC Tools. My Vista computer came bundled with Norton Internet Security and ran for a minimum of 1 GB of RAM. The main ingredient in getting my Vista computer to run for less than 1/2 as much memory was to uninstall all of the bloated security software that it came with and other programs that I added (PC Tools SD) and install Comodo Firewall Pro and Defense+ to run with Sandboxie which significantly dropped the computer’s memory use from the original 1 GB of RAM down to 487 MB…
There were also several other modifications that I made like turning off Sidebar and VSS (I now use Macrium Reflect), but it was the ultra low 60.9 MB memory footprint of Comodo security software that made it possible to cut the RAM usage of my Vista computer in a way that I never could have done with those other 300+ MB resource hogging security suites!
Maxxwire , nice to see your good results with COMODO. What is the software you use to display your memory usage? I have noticed the “2619” and the “487” icons and just got curious about it. Could you tell me?
There is no way that Norton Internet Security takes 300 megs of memory. I used it for 4 years and it never came close to that. My total Ram usage with NIS and with CIS was just about the same.
I’m sure that I don’t need to explain to you that the Vista kernel has 2X as many threads as the venerable and highly efficient XP kernel has and that the memory requirements of the brilliantly efficient NT 5.1 SP3 OS that you are now running are considerably lower than on Win NT 6.0 or 6.1. That said I have 3 different programs that measure RAM usage and they all confirmed that my Vista computer used in the neighborhood of 300 MB of RAM less after I ununsalled the expansive NIS suite and its massive outlay of files it had hidden all over the computer. I would expect and completely believe that your results in doing the same were as different as the memory use characteristics of the respective operating systems that we each use.
Yes, my computer has a total of 3 GB of RAM and these two figures represent how much RAM is as yet unused for applications and how much is currently being used respectively. I got the very lite MemInfo program which only uses 2.4 MB of RAM to display current memory usage after I disabled the Vista Sidebar along with its performance gadgets that used >50 MB of RAM to provide the same information.
The other program is a Memory Leak Recovery program that is very effective when used in Vista. After periods of heavy use I have seen it recover 50, 100, 200 and even up to 450 MB of RAM from Vista. When I first got my Vista computer it would use up to 2.3 GB of RAM during a busy session, but these days it uses at the most 800-850 MB of RAM and this Memory Leak Recovery program quickly returns the memory usage of the computer to the normal operating range of around 500 MB which is considerably less than 1/2 of what it typically used to use and the lightness of Comodo’s memory usage has made that possible. Since this program is not downloadable directly from the internet I would be glad to explain through PM how you can get this diminutive 2 MB program that accomplishes so much in Win 6.0 and I suspect in Win 6.1 also.
aeolis- I just sent you the information concerning the Memory Leak Recovery program that you requested although I suspect that the results of using it will not be as dramatic with your XP3 as they were with my Vista OS. One thing is for sure and that is any degree of Memory Leak reduction will be more noticeable on a computer that is protected by the memory efficient Comodo Internet Security software.
